Holy shit Freedom was a good OVA.
Just... Wow... First episode is like "yeah, well, okay, is this Akira V2 but about some teenagers and racing and shit on the moon? Ok, I guess that can work. This fully 3D animation is kinda bothersome though. Guess it'll be one of those mediocre shows" Then at the very end you go "oh, now that's interesting".
Second episode is "Uhu, yeah, okay, back to racing again are we? Eh... This old man is annoying and holy shit those proportions. Then at the end you go "oh, ohohoho, now this is nice".
Then every episode from there on is just "Holy shit this is good".
The 3D animation style is amazingly well done, visually. Animation wise it allows for details you otherwise wouldn't get, but the facial expressions are terrible. Like holy shit, they are so bad at times. And the eyebrows doesn't even have a high-quality texture. But other than that a lot of scenes look almost like they were actually drawn, which is really neat.
Character design is by the same guy that made Akira, so you get a big Akira vibe from the start, and it has a lot of the same futuristic setting and cast as Akira as well. He just likes it when it's like that, for sure.
Story is good, I really like it when a show not only takes us on the journey to the destination, but also further than that. In this case you're not only witnessing how they go from the moon to the earth after having been told Earth is dead and lifeless, but they also go back to the moon and try to straighten things up.
It plays on a lot of movie clichès in tight spots and dangerous situations which really makes you go "HERP DE DURP" at the show, but it doesn't ruin it in any way, even though it makes it blatantly obvious that it would never be possible (like how you in some games die a million times as a one-man army essentially pointing out how ridiculous it is that you're even doing it).
9/10 - A stellar experience with a different and generally well executed animation style. Nothing new about the story and setting, but it feels fresh and not rehashed.

I've been reading Vagabond for the past hour and I can't seem to stop.
Haven't been this hooked onto a manga in awhile.
the genre change with medaka box is pretty unsatisfying, i liked it more when it was like gintama/sket dance with the student council helping people instead of battle shounen
i thought medaka seemed kind of similar to kenshin from rurouni kenshin with her demonic-like mode and kenshin's battousai personality, and a few chapters later, shishio makoto appears as a villain
i'm reminded of even more jump manga since it reminds me of when they talked about changing the genre of a manga in bakuman

It is ridiculously gory and then it goes all cute on you for a little while so when it gets gory again you're even more OH GOD WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO THESE PEOPLE
It's also pretty tragic in an entirely unsubtle way, like more tragic-spectacle than actually tragic
I wouldn't really recommend it but I also wouldn't tell you it's bad enough not to watch it, so ~opinions~, I'd say watch it anyway just for the anime exp
