Let's rephrase this: What would Facepunch like to see in a server that is public?
Facepunch, I have a dilemma.
I have a HP DL360 G3 sat in my office right now. It has Intel Xeons at 2.6GHz, two of them, 4GB of memory and a 160GB drive in it. My plan with it is to ship it to my companies datacentre and have it running a commercial service for clients, but that won't happen until August at the very least.
So I figured I have a fairly decent machine here, one which could run a few game servers or something, and I don't want it to sit here idly for the next few months.
What do I do with it?
It currently has Windows Server 2003 installed and it's wired to my home internet connection by a gigabit switch. I can put a SuSE on it, or keep 2003. But either way I want to do something with it.
Do you have any suggestions?
make a gmod server
always need more of those
host stuff on it
css server
draw naked ladies on the walls with the rope tool
Make me an admin :smug:
I have a broken down IBM X345 server, the guy said it just needed two new power supply's, then I saw the price of the power supply's. Never again.
So I have this big piece of shit standing in the garage.
Such cool story.

How much were they? Did some poking around they only cost like 40-60 pound?
It's not only that, the server came in stripped from hard drives, and misses some fans. Which leads to the next problem: IBM hard drives for servers are hard to find.
Would that server still function even when I get those parts? I mean it has been standing in our garage for nearly a year. Woulnd't the humidity and all the moisture in the air take it's toll on it?

Wouldnt bother with it, if you had the spare parts lying around (like if you were working in a computer shop) then go ahead and test it, no point buying a load of expensive and unique fittings parts on a whim.
Could just sell on as broken equipment, someone could use it for spares and given it is old hardware it might prove to be somewhat valuable.
