Soild state drive, they're just another form of storage like a hard drive, but since they're not disk-based they're a lot faster than your standard HD.
Pretty much if you can spare the money having a smaller SSD as your main drive for OS, programs and a few games is optimal since it delivers way faster speeds than a normal HDD

Yeah SSDs are pretty expensive compared to a HDD, so you'd want both. A smaller SSD for your main OS/programs and a HDD for more stuff

Must just be the part of Baltimore you're in; I can probably count on a hand how many times our power has gone out due to a storm.
