It'll run, but not well at all on a laptop of his specs.
Divekick
Dota2 on the Source 2 engine
Factorio might work well.

If he sets it to DirectX 7 he should be fine, I ran it on a really, really shit desktop with fairly comparable specs. I mean not perfectly, but it ran :v:
I have the shittiest laptop and the only thing it can run on its own is
Windows XP's Pinball
Anything else (Half Life, Diablo II) crashes it.
So you should be fine with most games
BattleBlock Theater?
It says it needs 512MB of VRAM but I think it'll work fine, especially considering it ran as smooth as butter on my Surface Pro 3, which doesn't even have a dedicated graphics card.
Skullgirls in 2D and Killing Floor
Battlezone 2
Alpha Centauri

I want to thank you all who have been posting the videogames in this thread. Even though I have already played a sizeable portion of them, beggars can't be choosers, not on this shit laptop at least. Keep them coming.
Heroes of Might and Magic III is always a safe bet.

Warband (along with the original M&B and WFAS) all have the option in the launcher to switch between DirectX7 and DirectX9 :v:

If you have a means of connecting and staying connected to the internet, Ragnarok Online is an MMORPG and an option. While granted its a grindy as hell Korean MMO, its free with optional monthly premium and it will run on almost anything. Though it tends to turn into a slideshow if lots of spell effects are on screen, so you might want to stay away from PvP.
