how many relationships have you seen fail during your time in the military
all of them???
skeet
Congratulations! You are the ten millionth person to come up with that pun for my last name :P. [editline]25th July 2012[/editline]
how many relationships have you seen fail during your time in the military
A lot. Some are more hostile than others. Sometimes their girlfriend/wife would take all of the money and belongings and disappear. Those ones are the worst, especially if they are deployed at the time.
skeesh kebab skeeter skeefree i'll stop Is it mandatory for people to have their heads 100% shaved?
skeesh kebab skeeter skeefree i'll stop Is it mandatory for people to have their heads 100% shaved?
It was in BCT, but not in the big Army. [editline]25th July 2012[/editline] Also, congratulations, you have come up with 3 completely new puns of my last name. [editline]25th July 2012[/editline] Actually, the middle one has been said before.
Heh, I found a picture of me swearing in. This seems so long ago, but in reality this was last year on 27 April.
brave man
brave man
No more brave than the people standing next to me that day. [editline]25th July 2012[/editline] And another day of questions wrapped up. I have to be at PT earlier, so I might not get to answer questions when I wake up, but I will make sure to do so when I get back from PT.
Hey I've kicked around the idea of joining the U.S Army in a mechanics position, closer to what your friend does. Any opinions, tips, views, or wisdom you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Oh and thank you for your service.
Are you trained in hand to hand combat? And if so,do you just use your fists, or are you trained to use knives as well?

The only difference is the type of maintenance we perform. In every squadron/batal there is a Delta troop/company, which is responsible for the big maintenance tasks, such as replacing transmissions, engines, oil coolers, that sort of thing. Since I am in a flight troop (Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie), I am responsible for day to day upkeep and inspections, rather than pulling engines for overhauls. When I come back from PT I will post a detailed response to your question, and give you some good tips to succeed. [editline]26th July 2012[/editline]
Are you trained in hand to hand combat? You can choose to take combatives classes, and each level of combatives introduces you to more techniques. At level 3 combatives you start to deal with disarming weapons. Also, some combatives trains you to get away enough or free your limbs enough to retrieve your sidearm and shoot them. Honestly, combatives is not focused upon, it is an optional thing. If you want to be a successful helicopter mechanic, you need to be 100% thorough. You can't fudge cotter pins or lockwire. You also need to make sure that you have all of your tools at the end of the task. Never leave pieces of anything anywhere, it becomes FOD. Also, having thick skin is pretty much a requirement, because we mess with each other a lot. If you are a 15S (my MOS) be sure to be nice to the 15J's. Otherwise they will ball you up. On second thought, they might ball you up anyways. They haven't got me yet, I keep eluding them. That is all I can think of off the top of my head.
Do you ever play pranks on other soldiers?
Endurance is extremely important, but you also need to be generally fit, as you do lift a lot of heavy things in the Army, and you also need to be able to do things like pull-ups and be able to lift or drag other Soldiers in full gear. Also, don't tell anyone about this issue. Trust me. Just don't threaten to kill anyone or yourself.
Good to know. And the issue is nothing like that, more of a personal space type deal, using public restrooms and close contact with people etc. Hopefully something that I can conquer before moving on to college or the military at the very least.
Do you ever play pranks on other soldiers?
Of course. It is part of being in the Army. I pulled one today on an impressionable young cadet from West Point, by telling him all about a part that doesn't actually exist on the aircraft, and telling him to ask his crew chiefs about it if he becomes a pilot. I hope he does some day, so I can imagine the look on their faces when he tells them about the P-38 Jamming Fremmice. [editline]26th July 2012[/editline]
Good to know. We are all quite physical with each other.
What's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you and/or your colleagues?
What's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you and/or your colleagues?
The most embarrassing thing that has happened to me would probably be when I was the company guidon bearer during BCT. One day, it was really dry, and the dirt in Ft. Jackson was more like a thin layer of sand with clay underneath. When the company was halted at the DFAC, the guidon bearers would go forward and post the guidons by sticking them sharply in the ground, with the company one in the middle. Well, I was having a lot of trouble staking the guidon into the ground because it was so hard. I managed to finally get it to stay upright, and started walking back to my platoon. Well, the wind picked up and blew the guidon over, so the Drill Sergeants seized this opportunity. I was in the front leaning rest in front of the formation with the guidon propped on my neck (so it didn't touch the ground) until everyone else had gone in to eat. Another time my voice cracked while calling cadence for the company. [editline]26th July 2012[/editline] Oh hey, 1000th post! [editline]26th July 2012[/editline] Hey guys, I got an unexpected 3-day weekend. I will be in and out of this thread, as I am going to hang with a buddy some of the time, but your questions will all be answered in good time. I am excited, as I am getting my Stetson this weekend. If you know anything about the Cavalry, you can understand my excitement.
Any parts of the helicopter you enjoy/loath working on?
Any parts of the helicopter you enjoy/loath working on?
Ah, glad you asked. I (mostly) like working on some parts of the transmission decking. The part that I say I would have to hate the most are the transverse beam panels. They are put in an awkward spot, with some stuff bolted on them, with a ton of bolts and washers that are very easy to drop. You will hate life if you drop one, because they seem to disappear. I also hate working with lockwire, as the technical inspectors are really anal about it. [editline]26th July 2012[/editline] Oh, and removing A/C generators are a pain. It looks small enough, about the size of a coffee can, but a bit longer. However, they are about 25 pounds, and you need to take them out through the engine mount legs, which is uncomfortable. The lower right bolt is also in a very hard to reach place, as even the special tool designed to take it off can't get there easily.
What do you think was the best prank that you ever played on someone in the army?
What do you think was the best prank that you ever played on someone in the army?
I have not really pulled any good ones, as I haven't had much time or opportunity to put a grand one together. I will try harder in the future, and I am sure some craziness will happen on deployment.
Any pranks pulled on you? Sorry if this has been asked already.
Surprisingly, no pranks have been pulled on me. None that can really be called "pranks" at any rate. More like general messing around. [editline]27th July 2012[/editline] Ok, it is almost 0300, I need some sleep. 'Night facepunch, see you in the morning.
And I am back!
