What's a Stetson? XD
Cowboy hat. It's standard issue in European countries like Germany, effective weapon for spreading AMERICA.
What's a Stetson? XD
It is the traditional hat of the Cavalry, the ones that the original troopers wore. They are made by the Stetson Hat Company, hence the name. They are classy as hell, and steeped in tradition. I could elaborate behind all the traditions of the Stetson, like a "Stetson break-in" and what means what on the Stetson. Do you want me to? Anyways, here is a picture of the Stetson, as worn by a warrant officer in Vietnam. It's standard issue in European countries like Germany, effective weapon for spreading AMERICA.
I am sorry, but you are mistaken. They are not issued at all. Each trooper has to buy their own Stetson, or get sponsored for one. They then have to participate in a Stetson break-in before they can wear it. Also, they are for the tradition, not to spread American patriotism. Also, there are not many Cav units in Europe. I hope that clears everything up.
Of course. It is part of being in the Army. I pulled one today on an impressionable young cadet from West Point, by telling him all about a part that doesn't actually exist on the aircraft, and telling him to ask his crew chiefs about it if he becomes a pilot. I hope he does some day, so I can imagine the look on their faces when he tells them about the P-38 Jamming Fremmice.
Dude, that shit's basically mandatory over here. If you've just joined anywhere in the IDF, you'll get something like that thrown at you. That, and having your cellphone sealed in a bottle.
have you or your team mates ever got hit by a shrapnel?

Then, when they have to lift it up to get it back, the liquid spreads all of over the floor. [editline]28th July 2012[/editline]
have you or your team mates ever got hit by a shrapnel?
I have not deployed yet, so I have not had any shrapnel flying close to me. I am pretty sure that none of my buddies have gotten hit by shrapnel, regardless of all the rocket and mortar attacks they have survived, as none of them talk about it, or have wounds.

1. As a Crew Chief how many ranks must you rise to be the rank of Master Chief? 2. Is there actually a rank as Master Chief or is that some bullshit bungie made up?
1. As a Crew Chief how many ranks must you rise to be the rank of Master Chief? 2. Is there actually a rank as Master Chief or is that some bullshit bungie made up?
Crew Chief is not a rank, it is my job, and a position. I am currently a private first class, and am going to be promoted to specialist next year. Master Chief is a shortening of Master Chief Petty Officer, a Navy rank. The reason why they call him Master Chief is because he is Master Chief Petty Officer John 117. [editline]28th July 2012[/editline] Alright guys, off to go get my Stetson!
rip
Cowboy hat. It's standard issue in European countries like Germany, effective weapon for spreading AMERICA.
Never seen any American unit here with a Stetson, I can tell you that.
I'm back! Lo and behold, I finally am proper Cav. [editline]28th July 2012[/editline]
Never seen any American unit here with a Stetson, I can tell you that.
I don't think that there are any Cav units in Germany. The 2nd ACR is there, but there are no Kiowas in Germany any more. I am also not sure if there are any Cavalry scouts in any of the bases that we have there either.
wait whats the break in?
The break in is where they fill your Stetson full of a bunch of different alcohols, if you are over 21, and if you are under 21 anything on hand that they can think of really. You then start drinking it out of your Stetson, and when they feel you are done they flip it on your head and the rest of it spills on to you. It is odd to someone who is not Cavalry, but to us it is another fun tradition. I can't officially wear the Stetson until it is "broken in". Also, there might be a recitation of Fiddler's Green in order.
Has the helicopter preformed any cheap "Stunts" while at the base or on an operation?
Has the helicopter preformed any cheap "Stunts" while at the base or on an operation?
No, it is not really capable of doing aerobatics. Also, the pilots are crazy, but responsible and extremely professional. They don't do anything that would be an unnecessary risk due to the fact that they want to go home and see their families again at the end of the day. Keep in mind, you are talking about a helicopter that is over 40 years old.

Although as an enthusiast of hats, that's awesome. Sorry if this has been asked before, but what made you choose (or be chosen for?) A position like crew chief over something like, logistics?

I did not want to be logistics because that is a dreadfully boring job, and would not help me become a pilot. I work with pilots every day, so they can help me become a pilot. Logistics sucks.
Ok guys, time to hit the sack. See you in the morning.
whos sack :)
whos sack :)
Very funny. I meant my bed.
After a slow weekend, I am going to sleep early for my 4 mile run tomorrow. Once again, I will do my best to answer your questions when I get back from PT.
As I have said before, we are issued weapons based upon what the troop needs. I was randomly assigned to qualify on the M203 range, so I went there, qualified expert, came back, and was issued an M4-M203. Others went to the M249 and M240B ranges, as well as the M9 ranges. We also all requalified on M4's. That is the extent of the weapons that we as an aviation unit get. Remember, in the Army, you almost never get to pick what you want.
Sorry, didn't read the whole thread. I was also wondering because I'm reading The Fall of Reach (book based on the Halo series) and there's the MAxx, and a small paragraph deciding how the MAxy is a small variant designed for their mission, but fictional literature of supersoldiers in the 26th century doesn't really apply to the US army.
Why not the infantry? What was the best nick names you got in basic? How many female Drill sergeants did you have? What was the Farthest Ruck March you have been on?
Why didn't you Join the Infantry or Combat Arms? Not to be a dick just wondering
Infantry is the standard for those who have nothing better to choose (Although I respect the men/women who join willingly), and you can get shot at. Who would want that? :v:
Infantry is the standard for those who have nothing better to choose (Although I respect the men/women who join willingly), and you can get shot at.
Faster Promotions Chances to go Airborne school, Air Assault school, and even Ranger or Special forces selection. Combat Experience
Well I'm not familiar with the American system, but here its a little different. Faster promotion is subjective, as is combat experience (unless you are seeking active combat roles, I don't see how combat experience will net you your preferred profession). Anyone can apply for the KSK (Special Forces) and there are other ways to become Jagers and airborne soldiers. But I stayed where I was with Panzergrenadier, so maybe I didn't look into it enough.
Ok guys, back from PT. It was brutal. Top smoked us for about an hour and a half after our 4 mile run so I feel like a wet noodle, and work call is in an hour, but I am leaving in 30. Anyways, on to the questions. [editline]30th July 2012[/editline]
Why not the infantry? What was the best nick names you got in basic? How many female Drill sergeants did you have? What was the Farthest Ruck March you have been on?
I didn't do Infantry because I want to become a pilot, and Infantry is not a good springboard MOS for that. Also, Infantry is not as glamorous or as cool as people think it is. It has about zero job prospects for after the military. With my skillset as a helicopter maintainer, I can easily earn a six figure salary. The best nick names I got in basic were Skeener, Skeet Skeet, The Skeenroller, and Skeenis. There were actually a fair amount of female Drill Sergeants, about a 60-40 split male-female. The farthest ruck march I have been on was a 12 mile one. [editline]30th July 2012[/editline]
Faster Promotions Chances to go Airborne school, Air Assault school, and even Ranger or Special forces selection. Combat Experience
I am not sure if you are aware, but I have the choice to do all of that stuff. It really depends upon which post you are stationed at. As I am stationed at Fort Campbell, home of Air Assault, I can go to Air Assault school pretty much whenever I want. However, Airborne is hard to get into because of all the considerations they have to take for me to get to Fort Bragg and go Airborne and come back. I can also become a Pathfinder. Special Forces selection is open to everyone, and my MOS was just opened up for Ranger School. I can also join the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, due to my MOS as a Kiowa Crew Chief, I would be a crew chief on Littlebirds. The faster promotions thing is not necessarily true. I can make Sergeant in two and a half years, because as long as I go to the boards and have enough points, I am golden. I hope that clears everything up.
Love your new avatar skeea,I see you're really proud of your new Stetson.
