Coming from someone who works with a few mentally and physically disabled veterans, how do you feel about the dangers and high suicide rate that is associated with combat? (Not all of the veteran patients I work with are mangled due to their involvement with the military, but 1/2 of the time, their roles contributed to their injury)
And follow up question. I am considering joining the military as a means to help pay for college and advance myself in a medical career, I'm considering either the Navy or the Air Force as an enlisted medic, yeah or na on your part

I feel that the dangers of combat are a part of the job, but the high suicide rate makes me sad. I think that if more of my battle buddies sought help, then they would still be here. It has gotten pretty bad, every time we see ambulances parked outside of a barracks building, we all just kind of know. As for your potential military career, I would say that the Navy is the best route to go for being a medic. However, you must accept that you will be in combat as well as the Marines you are attached to. I am honestly not sure about medical opportunities in the Air Force. Your best bet would be to ask a recruiter. Just make sure to weed out the flowery BS that some recruiters like to tell people.
FappinGuide: Not yet.
Laferio: I think today was pretty funny. We had some flights today, so we pushed 4 aircraft out on the flight line and prepped them. Things were going fine, until a sudden thunderstorm started approaching. We go into full NASCAR mode and manage to clear the entire flight line of aircraft (there were a ton) in about 10 minutes. After we get done with that, it starts raining extremely hard. I then realize we left a Junior (pretty much a jumper kit for a helicopter) out at the other end of the flight line. I sprinted there, looking like an idiot, and started dragging it back (they are very heavy). Now, to my dismay, everyone from the other flight troops, including pilots and my 1st Sergeant, were all laughing at me. I looked like a wet rag. To top that off, I had to ride home on my motorcycle in this crazy weather. That was pretty weak as a funny story to be honest. As soon as a really good one happens I will be sure to let you know.
What do you mean "Not yet" (???) You plan on having sexual intercourse with someone the same sex as you? Oh, and no offense. Just wondering how it's like down there.

I said I would be completely honest. I don't plan on it, but anything can happen. Also, since DADT got repealed, no one in the Army really cares about your orientation. We all are comrades here.
On a scale of 1/10 how badly do you want to cause physical harm to the trolls in this thread
Also, what was the best and worst day of your life since you entered the Army

Well not all corpsman are attached to the marines right? they're needed else where too i would assume.
And as for the high suicide rate, it really is a tragedy, there's a certain degree of wrongness associated with seeing someone who has two tours under their belt, and reading their chart and seeing that they're a failed suicide, and suffered brain damage due to anoxia. I love the veterans at my place though, they seem to the be the more colorful/interesting patients when it comes to personality.

0/10. I don't feel any animosity towards trolls. I couldn't care less. You have to have pretty thick skin in the military, so what they say doesn't bother me. Anyways, my best day was getting assigned to a Flight troop. My worst day was when I had to go through the CS gas chamber in basic. The CS was so thick in there you couldn't see five feet. It was the worst feeling I have ever felt in my entire life.

That is a good question to ask a recruiter. I don't know how the other services operate, to be honest.

Ok guys, it is now midnight here, so I need to get some sleep before PT in the morning. Keep asking questions though, I will answer them before I head off to the hangar tomorrow.

You're friendly.
Too friendly.
Have you ever been injured as a result of combat?
Has there been a time in combat that you really thought you were going to die?

I haven't been in combat yet, as I have not deployed yet. However, I deploy a bit later this year, so who knows what will happen. Hopefully neither injury, nor fear of death.
any plans to set up speakers and blast music in your chopper ?
I would be lying if I said no. However, as my helicopter only seats a pilot and co-pilot, crew chiefs cannot fly with them. A rather unfortunate thing about my job.

Some day man, some day. After deployment we will see what happens. If I can, I will send you my unservicable ones during deployment so I don't see them go to waste.
[editline]19th July 2012[/editline]
Off to PT, to my 4 mile run. I will answer more questions when I get back.
oh thanks lol
ive heard that they just burn unserviceable gear and shit. a waste.
Do you love russian soviet weapons? Or you considering them a piece of metal? I served in army for 2 years and now i am in special army academy, i am planning to work in some sort of Specnaz after completing it.
So tell me, do you respect Makarov 9x18PM Handgun?
EDIT: What's dumb here?

If you think you intimidate me, you don't.
At all.

In 2 years after completing this academy i will be in special forces. So better don't make me mad.

I can't really form my own opinion because I have not fired any of them yet. As soon as I do, I will tell you though.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back, my platoon sergeant had us all go to the gym after the run for a bit.

There's a reason they call them the "Special" forces.

Thread Rerail:
I am not sure what CIF does with it after we direct exchange it. I know that with old ACUs we usually tear them up and throw them away.
Why facepunch is so bully?
I am not sure I understand your question.
Woah...for a second I thought this was gonna be a troll thread. You said you are the crew cheif, what are your day to day responsibilities?
Also why have you chosen to start up a thread like this? (this question is off-topic but I would like to know)

My day to day responsibilities are to maintain the helicopter and make sure it is flight worthy. I do inspections, servicing, and small maintenance tasks that come up. I also launch aircraft and recover them when they come back to land. As I am in a flight troop, the maintenance we do is small day to day upkeep of the helicopter. The Maintenance troop does all of the big tasks, mostly engine replacements, transmission replacements, and other things like that. For your second question, I decided to start this thread so that you guys could get to know me a bit better, and get a Facepuncher's perspective of life in the military. I enjoy telling people about it.
