• Ask an Army Crew Chief anything

Back from a get together at Buffalo Wild Wings. On to the questions.
You fly in a Kiowa, right? What do you typically do? Scouting/recon, or something more like CAS?
If only. W0w00t is right. Crew chiefs do not fly on Kiowas due to us using the Delta model, which has the MMS ball on top. The original space where crew would sit on A and C models is now taken up by a ton of black boxes (computers and buses). The real pilots do a variety of missions. Mostly convoy security, and finding terrorists to light up with the MMS.
Do you just work on transport choppers, or do you also do maint on attack helos as well?
My MOS is 15S: OH-58D helicopter repairer. I exclusively work on the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, an Armed Observation Helicopter.
Is it true for every hour of flight time, it's two hours or more of maintenance?
Yes it is true, but only because general upkeep takes maintenance hours. It is not really a direct ratio, as different tasks to maintain the helicopter happen at different intervals.
hows the omnissah treating your dogtags?
Quite well. Still have Cult Mechanicus on my dog tags.
As in the camera's right, or his right?
Camera's right, his left. [editline]19th July 2012[/editline] Any more questions before I go to sleep? [editline]19th July 2012[/editline] No? : (
Most of them are probably sleeping Chief.
I'm the guy directly to the right of him.
You are an extremely sexy man.
Most of them are probably sleeping Chief.
Please, I know you mean well, but I don't deserve to be called Chief. That title is for chief warrant officer 2's and above. [editline]19th July 2012[/editline]
You are an extremely sexy man.
I'm extremely flattered. [editline]19th July 2012[/editline] Ok guys, nearly 0000 again, so off to sleep before PT tomorrow morning. As per usual, I will answer any questions posted in the intervening time when I get back from PT. 'Night Facepunch.
Another question, How are you such a bro? I mean, shit, you're the most chill guy I've seen in a while.
Do you have any suggestions/advice for someone considering enlisting? I know it's general, so I expect a general answer.
Can you get me a tank?
Do you give praise to the Omnissiah every time you work on your helicopter?
Another question, How are you such a bro? I mean, shit, you're the most chill guy I've seen in a while.
I have extremely thick skin, so not much gets to me. I also just try to do stuff that makes everyone happy, and have a live and let live kind of outlook.
Do you have any suggestions/advice for someone considering enlisting? I know it's general, so I expect a general answer.
When you consider enlisting, you need to give each service a look before deciding, or at least narrow it down to two. Then you need to ask yourself what you like doing, and see which service is the most in line with your interests. Also, just talk to the recruiters, and remember these two things: Recruiters cannot just make you instantly in the military, no matter what they ask you to sign in the office, and some recruiters can make it sunshine and rainbows, so you need a good mental BS filter.
Can you get me a tank?
I could, but I would be out a lot of money. I can get a T-72 for the cost of a new Mustang. I could not get you an Abrams, as they are not for sale, and there are none where I am at.
Do you give praise to the Omnissiah every time you work on your helicopter?
I would be lying if I said yes. I don't, because then the people in my troop would think it strange. The most I get away with doing is laying my palm on things that aren't working, and comment how the machine spirit is tortured in said object. OK guys, off to PT. I will be back in ~1 1/2 hours.
Another question, How are you such a bro? I mean, shit, you're the most chill guy I've seen in a while.
Not everyone in the military are tight assed suits, most are just regular people keeping a job.
Not everyone in the military are tight assed suits, most are just regular people keeping a job.
This is mostly true, but the thing is that we have to go to hostile corners of the earth, and have to have military discipline. The thing is that I am in an aviation unit, and we are a lot more relaxed than other units that aren't, such as infantry. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline] Ok guys, off to the hangar again. I will be back later today to answer any more questions that have popped up in my absence.
Who's the biggest dick you have met in the army? Who is the coolest bro?
In the air force,do you still have to deal with incredibly strict drill sergeants who verbally take a dump on you every day and don't tolerate the slightest misconduct?
In the air force,do you still have to deal with incredibly strict drill sergeants who verbally take a dump on you every day and don't tolerate the slightest misconduct?
Last I checked they were not allowed to cuss out recruits anymore, and physically touching them is a no no too.
Not everyone in the military are tight assed suits, most are just regular people keeping a job.
No but he's not a regular person. He's like incredibly bro.
In the air force,do you still have to deal with incredibly strict drill sergeants who verbally take a dump on you every day and don't tolerate the slightest misconduct?
That's the whole point of BMT :v: It's not supposed to be a pleasurable experience
What's the messiest thing you've encountered . . . besides the urinals? [sp]My stepfather was in Vietnam and coming back from a mission leaving the chopper a soldier not paying attention walked right into the back rotor blades. . . my stepfather was the lucky one for clean up. :([/sp]
Back from work, on to the questions.
Who's the biggest dick you have met in the army? Who is the coolest bro?
The biggest dick I have met in the Army would probably have to be one of my platoon sergeants in AIT. He had his own way of doing things, and if things were not done his way, then punishment would happen. I didn't like him at all. The coolest bro would be one of my friends that I met in AIT, who happened to come here as well. He is one chill dude.
In the air force,do you still have to deal with incredibly strict drill sergeants who verbally take a dump on you every day and don't tolerate the slightest misconduct?
I am in the Army, but I can give a fairly accurate guess as to how they do things at Air Force BMT. Air Force DI's (Drill Instructors) are probably a lot like our DS's (Drill Sergeants) in BCT. They are loud and get on you a lot, but their sole purpose is not to demean you and abuse you all day. They are there to train you. Also, misconduct is a lot different from messing something up. Misconduct is purposeful breaking of rules and regs. If you simply mess something up, it is no huge deal. They know that what you are doing, you have never done before (usually) and they simply correct the mistake.
What's the messiest thing you've encountered . . . besides the urinals?
The messiest thing would probably be the 96th ASB hangar. Their shit is wack. All kidding aside, it would probably be the time in BCT when one private had a negligent discharge at one of the basic rifle marksmanship ranges and plugged someone in the leg. There was a lot of blood. You never realize how messy it can be to put tourniquets on bleeding wounds until you have done it yourself. It was a real shame that that guy died, but hitting the femoral artery is no joke.

No way I would of wanted to live with myself like that. :(

I purchased my very first gun not too long ago, C9-9mm it always has the trigger lock on it, a yellow slide flag, the safety on and the magazine out.
Are you the guy who flew out of the Sea Knight in CoD4?
I don't think anyone asked this but what is your rank in the Army?
Are you the guy who flew out of the Sea Knight in CoD4?
No, that was a Marine. He thought all of his accumulated OOH-RAH would have kept him in rather than a restraining harness. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline]
I don't think anyone asked this but what is your rank in the Army?
I am a PFC (E-3).
If you've had the following eye-related problems, is it possible at all for you to join to any air forces ever? Cataract (Removed via surgery) Tube in your eye that removes excess liquid (Removed) Iritis (Inflammation of the eye, gone, too) Bad eyesight (Correctable to 20/20, I guess)
As long as you get proper waivers and your eyes are correctable (glasses or LASIK) then you should be just fine.
Oh, so you can wear glasses in the air force if you fly helicopters? Jets are a different thing, eh?
Man, it's threads like this and guys like SKEEA that really make me want to pursue the whole USAFA route that I've been considering. I have no real plans following high school, so the military may be a good choice. How is it for the options you get? I've heard some people get shoehorned into one or two different types of jobs, while others have a huge variety of different specialties to pick from.
