Oh, so you can wear glasses in the air force if you fly helicopters? Jets are a different thing, eh?
I am going by Army standards. I know nothing of how the Air Force operates. The Army really accommodates people, they have lens inserts for anything. I think they will let you fly if you have contacts, but I am not sure. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline]
Man, it's threads like this and guys like SKEEA that really make me want to pursue the whole USAFA route that I've been considering. I have no real plans following high school, so the military may be a good choice. How is it for the options you get? I've heard some people get shoehorned into one or two different types of jobs, while others have a huge variety of different specialties to pick from.
It really depends on your ASVAB score if you are enlisting. Get a good AFQT and GT score and you are gold. However, if you go through the USAFA, then you will be able to try for slots while in the Academy. Pilot slots are everywhere, whereas there are very very few pararescue slots. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline] I found another picture of me. I am the 1st from camera right.
Looking good :p How long do you think it will take you to reach WO (Warrant Officer) And what is required to reach that rank? Also why not do that transfer thing (forgot what its called) to switch from enlisted to officer?

I want to be a pilot, so I have to make and submit a WOFT (Warrant Officer Flight Training) packet. If I get picked up, then I will first go to Warrant Officer Candidate School, and upon passing that, it is on to flight school. I plan on dropping my packet when I am deployed. Just a heads up, the internet there is going to be bad. 4 mbps download, 2mbps upload all for a troop of around 15.
My vision is nearsighted and I wear glasses but will that diminish the possibility of becoming a Helicopter pilot?
We tried. Also, it was the other guy's fault for not observing proper safety. His ass is in leavenworth.
Jesus, how long is he in for? Seems a tad unfair for an accident.
My vision is nearsighted and I wear glasses but will that diminish the possibility of becoming a Helicopter pilot?
Not gonna lie, they really like natural 20/20 vision. I would say go for it, and try to talk to a warrant officer about it. I am not 100% sure what the requirements are. I will ask one of the pilots around here about it on Monday. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline]
Jesus, how long is he in for? Seems a tad unfair for an accident.
I don't know to be honest. Keep in mind, through his own negligence he killed a fellow Soldier. A pretty serious thing in the Army.

I really need to contact someone about the ASVAB, it's a bit more difficult getting to take that and the PSATs and such doing school online and all. I was thinking about doing something on the technical side rather than being a pilot or something like that. I can't stand contacts, but if I ever managed to get LASIK being a pilot would be an interesting option. Something else I've always wondered, how much down time do you folks get? I was always under the assumption it was mainly work all day and get an hour or so to yourself before bed, but from the amount of time you've been able to answer questions it's seeming otherwise.

In the big military, if we are not doing PT or at work then we have time off. My job is pretty great for that, as maintenance actions on the Kiowas are either flight hour or day based. This means that some days we have more maintenance than others, but as we are really efficient at getting the maintenance done, we get off work pretty quickly most days. I got off at 1230 today because we had completed all that we needed to for today. Some days I got off at 1100. Some I get off at 1700. It depends. After that, though, the rest of the day is yours. Just be at PT formation the next day and you will be fine.
Has Metal Gear REX been built yet?
Why'd you chose the Army, as opposed to Air Force, Marines, Navy, etc. (I have friends in the Marines!)
Do you know any MOSs for colorblind people? I'm not talking about people that can still see red/green which can still get you infantry and artillery jobs, but I'm talking about people like me who are really colorblind and could fails the tests at MEPS. I know 68W is one of them but I don't know any others.
What is your daily routine?
Has Metal Gear REX been built yet?
If I tell you, I would have to kill you. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline]
Why'd you chose the Army, as opposed to Air Force, Marines, Navy, etc. (I have friends in the Marines!)
I chose the Army because of their Warrant Officer program. I have always wanted to fly, but I did not want to have to get a college degree first. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline]
Do you know any MOSs for colorblind people? Gotya. Good luck with that! One of my friends (Left at lance corporal) was offered the Warrant Officer program after leaving the Marines, said he regrets not accepting it!
What is your daily routine?
Weekdays: Wake up, go to PT formation, do PT, go home and eat breakfast and read sensationalist headlines, go to work, get maintenance done, come home, do whatever. Weekends: Relax and have a lot of fun with my buddies.
Did you feel like you "grew up" or became more mature because of the military?
Gotya. Good luck with that! One of my friends (Left at lance corporal) was offered the Warrant Officer program after leaving the Marines, said he regrets not accepting it!
Warrant officers make a good amount of money, I am surprised he didn't accept.
Warrant officers make a good amount of money, I am surprised he didn't accept.
Family related reasons, sadly.
Did you feel like you "grew up" or became more mature because of the military?
Yes. In high school, I was a bit awkward, never really going outside of my comfort zone and just hanging around doing regular high school things. I then joined the Army and I realized that I was capable of so much more. I carry myself with a lot more confidence now, and I know that I can do pretty much anything I set my mind to.
This makes me want to join some aspect of the military, but I am an only child and my parents would definitely not approve, especially since I think they have some idea of me becoming an engineer/entrepreneur. I wouldn't want to do that to them, it'd be different if I had siblings but from their perspective it won't be fun knowing their only son is at risk of being in combat on a daily basis.
Apologies if this has been asked already, but what's war like compared to the media?
Apologies if this has been asked already, but what's war like compared to the media?
I don't know, I haven't deployed yet. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline] Ok guys, me and a few buddies are going to go see the Dark Knight Rises so I will be gone for a few hours. You know the drill :P
Already saw it. You will not be disappointed :) On another note...did you sign up yet? (You know what I am talkin about :p)
How do they filter out the people who join the army as a suicidal thing? Testing?
I don't know, I haven't deployed yet. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline] Ok guys, me and a few buddies are going to go see the Dark Knight Rises so I will be gone for a few hours. You know the drill :P
more dangerous than patrol
Thank you for the response. I'm considering enlisting (air force) and I feel like I need to mature a lot. Would you have described yourself as athletic in school?
Already saw it. You will not be disappointed :) On another note...did you sign up yet? (You know what I am talkin about :p)
Sorry, I haven't. I will do so tomorrow morning when I am... not affected anymore by tonight's revelry. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline]
How do they filter out the people who join the army as a suicidal thing? Testing?
We have questionnaires occasionally. Mostly, it is trust in each other and the whole battle buddy system. We are all trained to recognize suicidal tendencies in our buddies, as it is such a problem. Would you have described yourself as athletic in school?
Hell no. I will be completely honest, I was a goddamn wimp. My pre-Army PT test I did terrible on. 17 pushups, 16 situps, and 2 mile run in 16:45. My PT test now I got 52 pushups, 80 situps, and 2 mile in 14:09. The military does a lot for your athletic ability if you push yourself.
Wow, just from reading this thread I feel more compelled to join the Army. I feel like my post high school career is pretty well laid out now.

I love this guy, he helped me out a lot. Props to you. How often do you go out on patrol? [editline]20th July 2012[/editline] Scratch that, just read your post about not having been deployed yet. [editline]20th July 2012[/editline] Also, I don't know if you remember me, but I've decided on 13 bravo and very excited to enlist!
