You did clean it first with soap and water, then some disinfectant and/or rubbing alcohol, right? If not, there is a chance that the purple could mean its infected.

I couldn't treat the wound because I had to get back to work. When I did look at it several hours later, it had stopped bleeding and started scabbing.

Closest it's gotten to treatment is some anti-bacterial ointment and band-aids. I didn't know what to do because I've never gotten a cut so severe before and my mom was out of town (she's the medical expert).
