Apparently it's following the novels to the letter, and that's why they didn't show the fight.
Somehow I get the feeling that Sabi wasn't actually killed and might be a more important character in future events, but that's half speculation half wishful thinking on my part.
Just seems weird that they would bother building up his character at all just to write him out of the series so nonchalantly.

Well, the people that didn't read the novel don't know that.
That's a possibility but I can't see it happening. Sure, all the chit-chattery about him for the first half of the episode really built up a strong character, but I had already forgotten about him when [sp]Shichika's sister used her hax abilities to defeat the insect squad[/sp].
