Get a job, pay some rent. Suddenly nobody gives a shit about your games.
I do have a job. I work from 5:30pm to 10pm on thu-fri-sat. It's not enough for her.
Honestly, I think 5 hours is too much for one day. Then again my attention span for gaming is awful since I usually only last up to 30 minutes before I get bored. There has to be other things out there for you to do. Hell, get into some hobby outside or something, like photography or some kind of sport. Despite being in college, I still find plenty of time to do other things and I've even taken the bus to other places besides back to my house for the hell of it, but that's only because I dread having to go back home after class. But really, you should just do what you want and not let your mom control your life like that. Sure, there's the risk of getting kicked out, but I'm sure she'll understand if you do end up wanting to do other things in time. [editline]19th November 2013[/editline]
It's obvious with your sleeping schedule that you are doing absolutely nothing else with your life besides waking up and sitting on your computer, therefore I would come to the conclusion that, with you, playing games for 5 hours isn't a good thing because it allows you to stay awake a lot easier than you would otherwise. Your mom seems to be complaining that you are doing nothing besides playing games (as if you were on a perpetual summer break), it isn't necessarily about the games, but it's about what the games have lead you to do.
This. She's probably complaining because she wants you to do other things besides spending a good portion of the day sitting on your ass playing games.
I do have a job. I work from 5:30pm to 10pm on thu-fri-sat. It's not enough for her.
What else are you actually doing with your life? I used to sleep all day and computer all night, for too long infact. Years, on and off. Take it from someone who knows, change your habits ASAP. The sooner you do, the easier it will be. Get the fuck out of your parents house, no matter how hard it will suck. The more it sucks now, the better off you will be. You sound like you need a serious injection of character.
I do have a job. I work from 5:30pm to 10pm on thu-fri-sat. Sure, some people may say 5 hours isn't shit, but trust me, it is. You're like what, in your early 20's or so? You should really be focusing on making the best use of being young while you still can, because once you're almost 30, you more than likely won't have those 5 hours a day back to do stuff you wished you could have done when you were younger.

Though his 13.5 hour work week makes me wonder what the fuck his job is. [editline]19th November 2013[/editline]
I do have a job. I work from 5:30pm to 10pm on thu-fri-sat. It's not enough for her.
Well...duh? Working 4.5 hours for 3 days a week amounts to a 13.5 hour work week, where being "part-time" is generally working 20 hours a week, and full-time being considered working 40+ hours a week. Considering that you have nothing really tying you down (i.e. school), you can definitely get a 40 hour work week, so...why aren't you? [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] Answer: because you're lazy. Honestly man, if you aren't even self-aware of the fact that you're lazy, and you think working for 13.5 hours a week when you have nothing keeping you from 40 hours a week is acceptable, then you're in pretty bad shape. Wake up man, I don't know what kind of weird world you live in, but your life is unacceptable, and needs a serious change if you want to be able to be considered a productive member of society. [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] I suggest you fix your sleeping schedule, go to sleep at 9-11pm, wake up at 6-8am, you know, normal times. I then suggest that you either A.) get a full-time job or B.) go to college and major in something real (you can even continue your current weird job while going to college) In a perfect scenario, you should quit games altogether until you are able to have a healthy balance of productivity and fun, because you have shown that you are unable to create this balance, allowing your addiction (yes it is an addiction) to completely demolish your sleeping schedule and as a result, your productivity and/or ability to do anything serious.
I'm taking classes at the same time. Mon-Wed is classes.
I'm taking classes at the same time. Mon-Wed is classes.
Oh, well...how many classes are you taking?
Oh, well...how many classes are you taking?
I have a class from 11am to 1pm on mon and wed, and a class from 6:30 to 10 on tue. In previous semesters Id be taking 4 classes at once, but it was always difficult for me to keep track of everytghing, there was always 1 class I was failing. At present, though, I'm behind on projects in my mon-wed class. Also I've been frequently absent from that class due to my sleeping pattern. Teacher says Ican still pass the class If I can turn in as much projects as possible before the end of the semester, though.

Work first, fun later. [editline]19th November 2013[/editline]
At present, though, I'm behind on projects in my mon-wed class.
My mom dosen't watch TV a lot, though, she prefers to listen to Religious lecture CD's.
you're fucked have fun till you have your own place [editline]19th November 2013[/editline] also I have naturally screwed sleep but still normally get enough jesus
granted this is the guy that drew the elf porn or whatever so idk
Hate to sound harsh, but if you are struggling with classes while only working a few hours a week then your lifestyle is a problem. Forget the research, it does not matter if someone else can live a normal healthy life while playing five hours a day, you obviously cant. If you cut your gaming back to an hour or two on weekdays you could go to sleep earlier and have more time to study. Also sunlight can help a lot, if you get up early and spend more time awake during the day it can really help you not only psychologically but physically as well.
What I've gathered so far from people's reactions is that gaming is not the real problem, it's my time management that's the issue.
What I've gathered so far from people's reactions is that gaming is not the real problem, it's my time management that's the issue.
Part of time management is cutting back on leisure time and hobbies though. If you cant bring yourself to cut back you may have a serious addiction, in which case you should consider getting help.
I do 4-5 hours a day, but not everyday and I had to convince my father if the same thing. I use my computer for a lot of things, and that's something you need to convince your mom into believing. A computer can be used for the same things that television, game consoles, cell phones, and radios can do plus more. They're a hub for a lot of different things that a good portion of people do on different devices. Since those devices are a bit more spread apart (say, a tv and console in the living room where your parents can see that you're actually partaking in a different activity versus just switching tasks on your PC) your parents will see you as being more active, though it might not be much it is still something. If you want them to drop the concern for your oh so unhealthy PC use, just spend a bit more time in their sight. That's all I took for me, plus the explanation that I'm using one device for the same thing many people spread out to three, four, five and sometimes more devices.
Also important to keep in mind is that my current sleep schedule as of late IS messed up. I tend to wake up at 3pm and sleep at 6am. I'm trying to fix it so I'm at least getting up at 9am and in bed by 3am. Most of my gamign time takes place between those hours of 12am to 6am. Naturally, Mom hates the fact that I'm not asleep at those hours.
...Welp! And I thought my sleeping schedule was a little fucked, but that just takes the biscuit. Good luck on that, seriously. I really don't know If I can talk about sleep. But... I guess I could try. Like a lot of people, I'm constantly looking at a computer screen, which doesn't quite help. But I'm keeping myself busy with other stuff. So I can't really say how long I'm gaming for myself. I suppose, it has to do with what you have to wake up to. I'm pretty bad at waking up unless I've got something to wake up to, such as college or a driving lesion, girlfriend, or just friends in general, stuff like that. Then I mostly have no problem. If I had a part time job or something then I would have much better sleeping. When it came to the summer, which is usually really bad for me. I was busy working on something on RPG Maker and that ended up making me more tired than just playing a game all night. I don't know. (I should really go back to that project...) I know people who have done worse than 5 hours... Well, I say that, and sometimes I can do more than that. I really can't talk... I've been surviving with around 7 hours sleep for god knows how long, I was never one who got much sleep in the first place due to worries and nonsense like that. I'm not the healthiest person in the world, not too sure about "normal" either. But then again, what is normal? I think this is a case of knowing when to say "I think this is my last game for the night" before it gets to stupid'o'clock. Want me to be honest? I think your Mum's trying to help you.
What I've gathered so far from people's reactions is that gaming is not the real problem, it's my time management that's the issue.
Yeah mainly, though do you have to game everyday to relieve stress or something? Or if you skipped a day would you be fine?
nope, but playing or staying on the computer for 24h+ is not normal
Part of time management is cutting back on leisure time and hobbies though. If you cant bring yourself to cut back you may have a serious addiction, in which case you should consider getting help.
I think I've figured out my problem. It's not exactly that I'm playing too much, it's that I'm not doing anything meaningful with the rest of my time. The rest of it is mostly just goofing off in front of the computer and other non-gaming computer related stuff. That and my fucked up sleep pattern, which I am trying to correct. I actually woke up at 10 am today. Went to sleep at 6am again last night, but better then nothing. Was watching netflix on my tablet.
Edited OP to include my sleeping habits. EDIT: This article I found seems like something that would convince my Mom, but it says "limit to 1 hour, no more then 3 hours". It's close, but just short of an extra 2 hours.
