I've thought about doing that for something I've worked o but didn't have the time.

if you feel like putting the effort in you could employ techniques similar to what guilty gear xrd uses to make the render look more like 2D art. the upside is that it's easier if you have to deal with lots of frames, the downside is that it's harder to set up and looks bad if you do it wrong. I saw an artist who basically makes his backgrounds in 3D then traces everything into 2D.
