A few weeks ago when I stayed at my friends house, one of my friends went to sleep about 11PM, the rest of us stayed up until about 3 or 4AM, then the guy that went to sleep early woke us up about 4.30AM.

Yep. It's an acquired taste, like aniseed. Personally, i'm ok with it, but it's not exactly my favourite cup of tea.
The style of anime I like is generally frowned upon cause of the lack of anything over-the-top, so it's not surprising the fact that it isn't so famous.
Anime is alright as long as you're not one of the types who are like 'ANIME IS THE ULTIMATE FORM OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION' or some shit like that
