No, the bullets are like 7 pixels wide, just you won't actually be hit by them unless your ship happens to touch the exact middle pixel.

And the hitbox is typically all glowy and shit, so you know where it is.
Lets just put it this way; This game is messed up.
They're fun, but dammit if they aren't frustrating as all hell.
