i'm not so sure about the crashing but the lag spikes would probably be related to your cpu. it's a very cpu intensive game. would it get laggy whenever you destroy stuff?

At the beginning I was able to drive a large truck straight through a huge EDF building, and keep smashing it around until the point of collapse. However as I progressed, I soon found that I couldn't even drive down the street without ungodly lag spikes. Soon the game stopped working altogether.

I got a wave of nostalgia today and reinstalled Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. I love playing as a big dumb half-ogre guy.

Declining stability not linked to game progress probably indicates the installation itself is fucking up, or your computer's coughing it's last. I'd say have a go at reinstalling it. If it still goes screwy, either an update to a system component (drivers, Windows update etc.) killed it, or you need to get ready to buy new hardware components.
