Mass murdering isn't necessarily faster. A serial killer and a mass murderer are basically the same thing, except a serial killer has a routine, a method, a sort of trade mark style of killing.

Serial killing: Killing innocents or specific targets in a certain way each time, usually repeated. Some serial killers tend to leave behind signs of their existence; letting the authorities know that they mean business. (i.e. Zodiac)
Mass murdering: Murdering and killing innocents at random, no specific way, no signs... Usually get caught in the end though.
