I'd advise against the free bleed approach. I know a few gals who used to do that, and they basically ruined quite a bit of their clothes by doing that. While you might not want to, the disposables will probably be the better approach to go with. If anything, using pads instead of tampons would probably also be the better approach; they're [I]usually[/I] cheaper and safer than tampons (if you don't know what I mean by the safer bit, tampons have the included risk of causing toxic shock syndrome if used improperly).
And since I feel like some people might be wondering why I know this stuff, it's because I used to have a girlfriend who would constantly get on my ass about buying the wrong feminine hygiene products for her (which I probably would have done less often if she actually went to the store with me instead of making me go and get them for her all the time so that I knew what the hell I was looking for at the time).

Considering that I've actually had a bug get into my ear before (what a fun hospital trip that was), yes, quite frequently. Especially during the summer, when the bugs in my area are particularly more active.
