I find it hard to make up original ideas. That's probably why I haven't made any attempt to write something in quite some time.

If you can, come up with a very basic scenario and just roll with it, see where things go from there. I went from a straight-up Star Wars fanfic to something individual that I'm really quite pleased with by using that technique. Just make sure you stay focused on wanting to see what happens next. If you just go [i]eh, whatever,[/i] you'll have a really unpleasant time.
