I'm not sure why, but i am having a hard time believing that's 'just' ammunition.
Yeah, I had to check up on it as well, but it's true. It's the SS John Burke.
TNT can literally simulate a nuke in large enough quantities.
Yep, in fact the Trinity nuclear test was precluded by a detonation of roughly 108 tonnes of TNT in order to rehearse the procedures and cleanup operation.
TNT can literally simulate a nuke in large enough quantities.
Well, yeah. One megaton of TNT is, surprisingly, equal to a nuclear yield of one megaton of TNT. The units aren't arbitrary.
You would be amazed just how big conventional explosions can get, especially ship explosions. Pictured, the Japanese battleship Yamato suffering a magazine explosion after capsizing. That's most likely well over a hundred 46cm high explosive and incendiary shells going up at once. In the lower left, you can see one of the escorting destroyers for scale. That ammunition ship was undoubtably a lot smaller than the largest battleships ever constructed, but considering it's only role was to carry ammo, it was presumably carrying A LOT of explosives. And here is a rather more related image. This is part of the aftermath of the Halifax Explosion, in which an ammunition ship exploded at anchor in Halifax, completely obliterating everything for about 160 hectares and killing thousands. Admittedly it was carrying a cargo of mostly raw explosives, but the point still stands.
Yeah the halifax explosion was insane, that's actually where I grew up so we learned about it pretty early on. Biggest man made explosion of its time.
Over 1,600 people were killed instantly and 9,000 were injured, more than 300 of whom later died.[23] Every building within a 2.6-kilometre (1.6 mi) radius, over 12,000 in total, was destroyed or badly damaged.[57] Hundreds of people who had been watching the fire from their homes were blinded when the blast wave shattered the windows in front of them.[62] Stoves and lamps overturned by the force of the blast sparked fires throughout Halifax,[63] particularly in the North End, where entire city blocks were caught up in the inferno, trapping residents inside their houses. Firefighter Billy Wells, who was thrown away from the explosion and had his clothes torn from his body, described the devastation survivors faced: "The sight was awful, with people hanging out of windows dead. Some with their heads missing, and some thrown onto the overhead telegraph wires." He was the only member of the eight-man crew of the fire engine "Patricia" to survive

TNT can literally simulate a nuke in large enough quantities.
That is absolutely not 1 million tons of TNT. That would be the energy equivalent to a 1 megaton nuke, which that is clearly not even close to. [editline]7th November 2015[/editline] Some people in the comments said 1 million pounds. That seems much more accurate.
it's 500 tons of TNT [editline]6th November 2015[/editline] which is guess how many pounds [editline]6th November 2015[/editline] i'll give you a hint it's exactly as many as the narrator in the video says
If my math is right, 1 million tons of tnt would require 6428.85 cubic miles of space (i used wikipedia's info on a stick of dynamite being 8 inches long and 1.25 inches in diameter and half a pound and just based it on that volume) e:it seems like a really fucking big number though, not sure if it is right at all.
this is the pile detonated in that video
We still talking about explosions? Remember this gem?

This thing is awesome and will soon enter its first real tests. So what's the aim of this fusion reactor? Is it an attempt to create a more efficient fusion reaction or is it just for research purposes so we can better understand things? [editline]7th November 2015[/editline] But man, imagine having to draw a diagram of that in a science class.

That fusion reactor is some absolutely sci-fi shit. I love it
Fun fact: TNT is often shaped by melting and casting it in a mould:

Holy shit I thought that reactor was some fictional 3d artwork, being real makes it ten times cooler

Like jamponge asked. Is it designed to produce a net-gain yield of energy, or is it meant to simulate a sun for research purposes?
Like jamponge asked. Is it designed to produce a net-gain yield of energy, or is it meant to simulate a sun for research purposes?
I think it's meant as a proof of concept for stellarators, in the hope that they will eventually be able to produce a net gain of energy.
Yeah ive read up on it, and as far as my layman mind can grasp, its meant to produce a sustained reaction with minimal risk of failure. You could think of fusion reactor concepts up until now as kinda clunky machines that produce a lot of friction in their process, which wears down their components. This thing basically flows smoothly and gently in comparison, and so you could run it for sustained periods safely.
I love all the vent bits on the outer shell, there's no apparent pattern to their placement so it almost looks cobbled together out of pots and pans.
