You're already pretty fucked up as-is if you live in Scarborough. :v:

The population is generally low-brow." I am heavily amused. Maybe thats why the school looks like a fortress.

I like baroque
I like brutalism a lot as long as it is designed well, if it isn't designed well it has as much beauty as a pile of cinder blocks. Anyone ever seen a rammed earth construction? [thumb]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/2f/4b/f6/2f4bf66a2ab765c0a44fbff1800530ca.jpg[/thumb] Its an interesting method to build things, its pretty similar to concrete. Basically you build a mold for the wall you want, you find dirt from somewhere, and then you compress it with a hydraulic ram in layers. The resulting material is like concrete, but a bit less strong, however it is strong enough for domestic buildings. Because you can take the soil from somewhere nearby the materials are extremely cheap, and it looks pretty nice.
I like all sorts of architecture [t]http://41.media.tumblr.com/7bd80926c29cbc7028cf1ca45af57db7/tumblr_nk382yFt3r1rxrwjfo1_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://36.media.tumblr.com/20fdff47be13c7e4cc47e77e7c0c8070/tumblr_nxh2u7RQWY1s5qhggo10_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://40.media.tumblr.com/0c9c3ae13629d94e8f94145bcc0412e4/tumblr_nul12twYys1qd2yqto1_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://41.media.tumblr.com/85869a520f4ebac9539e8448ef78a4e5/tumblr_noo6ovyDDE1qj3u39o1_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://40.media.tumblr.com/8701b8e566d52d5914b8812504339d4e/tumblr_mlq8fsKILh1s7fpi1o3_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://40.media.tumblr.com/e8fa8caa72ed8e2cedfcaea6c31090a4/tumblr_nwcsdabENO1rahkago1_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://41.media.tumblr.com/2797c784c03997098be97b7f250b2066/tumblr_nvbnr7VFUw1rwtpo1o1_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://41.media.tumblr.com/2d07e9a93d7637d5d81c1a8770e8beb5/tumblr_nvjjm2bTUr1qb4hb2o2_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://40.media.tumblr.com/e30976701cc1b313d64b3d4f0015d652/tumblr_nusrb9eAgO1s5qhggo2_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://41.media.tumblr.com/7d85f54a5dcc0dd60d28452e2daf3e31/tumblr_nre3z73iqr1rrx0k7o1_1280.jpg[/t] [t]http://41.media.tumblr.com/1d41010bffd455afd199b901fd961d0e/tumblr_nh7ij6AgTB1qjr7k7o1_1280.jpg[/t] cba to source each, but they can all be found here

Why does this thread love brutalist so much. IMO it's either okay or terrible. I like the architecture with organic, flowing lines, clean textures, and parts of nature mixed in, like parks on the roof. I guess it's called organic architecture. Just don't go overboard with the threes. [editline]18th November 2015[/editline] Brutalist to me feels like a failed attempt at "this is what the future is going to look like." You could probably say the same thing about the style I mentioned above, though.
Brutalism is cool in concept, but horrible in person. It's basically fun to look at - s'why we like it.
Brutalism is a "sometimes" style. I'd use it for stuff that should look strong and unyielding - anything military or security, dams, seawalls, power plants, heavy-industrial factories, stuff like that. I wouldn't use it for stuff people tend to live in or frequent, unless practical concerns meant better styles wouldn't work.
Brutalism is great for buildings that want to look like prisons or lairs for villains with names like 'Colonel Chunk Fist', but for a building for people to live, work or enjoy their free time in they have zero redeeming emotive qualities
Is it strange that I find things like steel mills to be beautiful? Can anyone explain what's actually happening in that video?
Can anyone explain what's actually happening in that video?
It's a pulse reactor going critical before the control rods drop in and the reaction stops. 240MW out of a reactor a metre across is impressive.

Hate to bring it back to brutalism but I just want to point out how bland and uninspired the exterior of my city's art gallery is: Compared to the amazing interior: [thumb]http://www.specifiersource.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Art-Gallery-of-Western-Australia.jpg[/thumb] They put up electronic signs around the entrance a few years ago after years of asking permission because this ugly duckling of a building is heritage listed. Also IIRC it's one of the few brutalist buildings made out of brick rather than concrete but I might be wrong on that.
This segment from an episode of The Big Picture, a television programme produced by the United States Army Signal Corps Army Pictorial Service, compares the uniforms of the US Army and US Marine Corps with that of the Chinese army. The winter of 1950 began early and caught the UN forces deployed to Korea off guard and left many troops without adequate cold weather clothing and gear waiting for logistic and supply to bring it up to the front. The footage shows the padded jacket and tunic which made up the Winter Field Dress worn by Chinese and North Korean troops and compares it to the layered approach worn by US troops. In reality not all US personnel were so well equipped many were issued with surplus winter uniforms from World War Two including the cumbersome overcoat parka.
If we're on the topic of brutalism, then the "Casa da Musica" in Porto, Portugal will be right up your alley: [t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/60/Casamusicaexterior.jpg/1920px-Casamusicaexterior.jpg[/t] [t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/Casa-da-musica%28interior%29.1024.jpg[/t] [t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/89/Casa_da_M%C3%BAsica_interior_01.jpg[/t]
