what style of architecture is that anyway? the archs, details and especially the columns are very roman or greek looking but the whole "big fucking cube" idea sort of fights with that IMO
then again, i'm not very architecture savvy and tend to associate that style more with slanted roofs and domes

So you guys like bridges, eh? How do you feel about tunnels?
How do you feel about... bridge-tunnels?

Behold, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It goes over the water, it goes under the water. And then it does it all over again, because the whole thing is two tunnels, eight bridges, four artificial islands and a passable seafood restaurant, because this is the South, and we will deep-fry anything, anywhere, anytime.
The tunnels solve a very practical problem. The US Navy's has the largest naval station in the world all the way up in the Chesapeake Bay, and they like to build big ships. Really, really big ships. So they couldn't do a drawbridge sort of design because you just can't build a drawbridge with a long enough span to let one of those big supercarriers through (and you need to, because Norfolk's got five of those fuckers). Plus all the commercial traffic, which there's a lot of as well.
So, since they can't make a bridge the carriers can go under, they made one they can go over. There are two mile-long tunnels that the "bridge" goes through - I assume it's divided for inbound and outbound sea traffic, but I actually don't know and couldn't quickly find out. Since even the US Navy hasn't built any ships with a beam of a mile, that should handle even the biggest ships we'll make for a long, long time. And to help handle traffic, there are a few places where the bridge spans a longer distance between piles, to let smaller ships through ("smaller" in this case can mean "up to 75 feet high").
The whole thing is almost 18 miles (28 km for those using rational units), or a bit over half the length of the Chunnel. And sure, it doesn't look all that aesthetically pleasing. It's long and not particularly ugly but it's not what I'd call beautiful art. What it is is a good solution to a real problem, which is how engineers define beauty.
This is as big as it gets over here

For being just about two and a half miles / four kilometers, my town's bridge is pretty spiffy. Can even do the whole thing on foot.
How about some covered bridges in New Hampshire.

Oh ya it's definitely an ugly one.
It's the parliamentary [del]building[/del] bunker of Finland btw., where all the congressmen conduct their juggling sessions in safety from any bombing. :vs:
However, as a defense to our country, we've got quite a few other impressive buildings around, which are not so ugly.
We love this bridge so much we put it on our money and had it named a world heritage site.

Every damn fucking day there is traffic out of the ass because people don't know how to drive through the tunnel. They all tap their brakes and think they're going to hit the walls. You're not supposed to change lanes or slow down/go above 45 (or 55 I think?) yet EVERYONE STILL DOES.

I used to travel over this almost daily a few years back, the photos can't show how long that thing really is. This system's also one out of ten bridge-tunnel systems in the world, three of which are in the United States - and all three of those are located in Hampton Roads.
EDIT:
Eh, I should probably add a little more.
