Why is the entirety of Scandinavia so fucking amazing
Why is the entirety of Scandinavia so fucking amazing
The amazing parts look amazing. The parts where they throw rocks at my dog while I'm walking her? Not as pretty places. I assure you, all countries have amazing sights and terrible ones.
i dont understand
The earth on the right has its height warped based on the gravitational strength at points on the surface.
Yeah, basically high points have "more" gravity compared to what you'd expect by equal distribution of mass. India misses mass, north of Australia is hogging it.

Carbon does not melt at atmospheric pressures, it sublimes directly into a gas at 3915K (3642°C). Only at pressures above its triple point (about 10800 kPa, and 4600K) will it have a defined melting and boiling point. I'm surprised that they didn't put tungsten in, as it has the thoroughly hilarious boiling point of 6203K. To put that into perspective, it would be a liquid on the surface of the sun. Helium does not freeze at atmospheric pressures either, you have to compress it by quite a bit to convince it to go into the solid state. Fun fact: liquid helium forms a superfluid below 2.172K, and starts doing funky shit like this: [editline]15th February 2015[/editline] Now for some beautiful chemistry! Ladderanes and fenestranes are named for their structures, which look like ladders and windows (from Latin, fenestra), respectively. I personally think they look more like someone went overboard with making a Christmas card, but that's me. [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22/Ladderane_Nomenclature.png[/t] Ladderanes [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/39/Fenestranes.png[/t] Fenestranes The keen-eyed science enthusiasts among you might think that these are purely the work of organic chemists with nothing better to do, but you'd be wrong. Ladderanes are actually found in the lipids of certain bacteria which guzzle ammonia in anaerobic environments. These lipids serve to stiffen up the cell membranes of the bacteria and make it less permeable, which helps to keep stuff where it should be. This is especially important for these guys because their particular way of feeding produces lots of horrifically toxic stuff like hydrazine and hydroxylamines. Yikes. [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/Ladderane_lipids.png[/t] Ladderanes in lipids Ladderanes in the cell membrane Chemists love these types of compounds, partially cause they are interesting, but mostly because they are hard to make. The reason for that is because you have to force the carbon bonds to do funny things that they don't normally want to do. Carbon likes to have an angle of 109.5 degrees between the things attached to it. In those things, the angle is more like 90 degrees. Imagine if someone asked you to bend forward to smell your balls. Not impossible, but not the most comfortable thing either. So they have to do funny things like generating dicarbomethoxycyclobutadiene from its Fe(CO)3 complex in-situ by adding cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate at low temperatures and allowing it to dimerize into a mixture of ladderanes, or by inducing [2+2]photocycloadditions in polyenes held together in the optimal position by chemical spacers. Yeah. Join me next time as we explore more weird and wonderful compounds! In the meantime, have some Cthulhu.
