I imagine they feed/absorb nutrients by sucking in water and filtering it, and the food colouring just shows us those micro currents

That's really cool. I find it pretty interesting how you find a lot of natural jet propulsion among water-dwelling creatures; I guess it's an effective way of getting various things accomplished down there.

It's a sponge. It continuously filter feeds through the sides and out the top.
My bet would be it's just filtering the water current and the plant thing itself doing little movement at all.
As a gesture of humility, it is a tradition for senior members of the US Army, both officer or NCO to serve their subordinates during holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas at base. A part of an older tradition in where the lowest enlist eat first before the higher members do. Many units spare no expense in preparing lavish feasts for men and women that have to remain at the base and away from families.

Not exactly military, but one day out of the year the commandants/officers at my academy do this
It's fuckin weird to have someone who normally yells at you for not having your shoes shined serving you food.

Bahaha we just had something similar in camp today. For Chinese New Year, the commander of my camp, a Colonel, handed Mandarin Oranges to recruits. Different worlds and culture, similar practices.

Common exceptions to the rule usually include Drill Sergeants and it is always required for people that are serving food to have some form of headgear to cover their hair.
We don't do anything like that, our officers eat in a different cantine, even the messes are separated into enlisted, NCO's and then officers.
Even generals aren't spared in taking part in serving their own men

I LOVE unique instruments like this. I want to start a collection but a lot of pieces like this are rare or cost an extraordinary amount of money
