IJA officer wearing traditional armor, most likely a family heirloom:

On that note, have an image of some armor that was actually used for combat by the Japanese during WW2 (in limited numbers though, and this model being used only in mainland China, if I am correct):

Always find "anachronistic" body armor to be pretty cool.

The Antilia Building.
Antilia is a private home in South Mumbai, India. It is owned by Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Limited and includes a staff of 600 to maintain the residence.
While the New York Times in 2008 reported that it cost $500–700 million, it is believed to be worth $1 billion USD, due to the rising costs of surrounding structures currently in South Mumbai. As of November 2014, it is deemed to be the World's second most expensive residential property,
That's a 27 floor building with 400000 square feet of space for one family.
I think it looks fucking terrible
It looks... like a digital watch stripped down to be as basic as it can be. It's the kind of thing I could imagine seeing in a slightly more optimistic Mad Max film.

While VFDs look great, they are absolutely retarded for this use, as they use a huge amount of power.

Does it look like it was meant to be practical?

I think you mean 'culture' rather than 'cults',
and yes it probably has been worldwide. Just look at the panther in The Jungle Book

This picture isn't a real case of Melanism though, but more of a visual representation of what it could look like.
Here's the original pic.

Yeah, melanism is extremely rare. As of now, there are no alive menalistic lions, and the latest rumour of one circulating an african village was in 2008 or something.

Because we all knew how well some futuristic looking concept turned out:
