There was a book from the 90s called "the black company", which is basically the forerunner to the catachan style/Gaunt books, except unlike every other series even before game of thrones, the main characters can and do often die, because that's what happens to mercs in a fantasy world with super badass wizards trying to control the world. Anyway, the company pisses off a particularly powerful cabal of wizards (one of whom is actually the avatar of an elder god in disguise) and the only place they can hide is in a desert where another set of alien gods have a direct connection to the worlds, so it's pretty much untouchable ground for the cabal. The standout scene of this part is the mercs having a discussion of how the fuck they are going to get out of this place while riding a gigantic flying whale. This scene was reproduced for promoting the book by three different painters, they've kind of been shorthand for "you're not in kansas anymore, toto" ever since. and that scene was inspired by fantasy painting by scifi artists such as Chriss Foss, John Cardos and Timothy Bradstreet in the 80's who sometimes had flying sea creatures in otherwise generic suburban scenes on random generic pieces done for Omni magazine and Amazing Stories to pretty much signify "just like your town but different."
[t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8b/Franklin-Roosevelt-1884.jpg[/t] 2 year old FDR
FYI, dresses were considered gender-neutral for very young children at the time. Easy access to diapers and white cotton could be bleached in case of accidents. It's largely up to the mother to what they wear and for mothers, what the children are wearing is far less important than what the husband is wear. Why did this end? A change of multiple things at the end of the 19th century. Modern mass media (including popular fashion and advertising), works by Freud, children attending school at an earlier age, and the compounding effect of social attitude to gender awareness made the usage of dresses on boys decadent. Fun fact: One of those who stresses boys to be "real boys" the most is no other than Teddy Roosevelt.
3 days and 240 years ago, on April 19, 1775, the 'shot heard around the world' happened at Lexington. A group of colonial minutemen gathered to confront oncoming British Regulars in order to defend military caches that Patriots had collected. The militias were said to have been given explicit orders to not fire unless fired upon and that British Regulars were said to have never been given explicit orders to open fire upon the subjects and the primary intent of their presence was to act as a 'show of force' to the colonists, never specifically fighting them. During the time, many colonists still viewed themselves as subjects of the King. The ensuing battle resulted in numerous British casualties as they were constantly harassed by local militiamen for about 15 miles during their retreat from Concord to the city of Boston. "The whole Country was assembled in Arms with Surprizing[sic] Expedition, and Several Thousand are now Assembled about this Town(Boston) threatening an Attack, and getting up Artillery. And we are very busy in making Preparations to oppose them"
[img_thumb]http://home.comcast.net/~fredra/SeigeBoston.jpg[/img_thumb]
The diagrams above show the disposition of American troops around Boston during the siege. The rebels virtually had no gunpowder to supply their amount of cannons during the siege. General Washington at the time bluffed the besieged British Army in Boston and the British Army dared not call his bluff and instead the British retreated from Boston via boat.
You gotta hand it to a then, bunch of raggedy militiamen with muskets to stand up to a world superpower at the time and the ballsiness of our homeboy G.W.

No point wasting nukes on empty silos. There is little to no point attempting a counter-force (i.e. nuclear weapons on the ground) attack unless you can reliably destroy nearly all the weapons. If you've only got 500 weapons left because the rest were destroyed then your only option really is to lose less than the enemy, by destroying them more than you. At that point you're playing the long game and trying to destroy them so much that your nation recovers faster than them.
