While it's prettier, it's not practical to have them horizontal. If you're counting a stack, you're going to look at a corner (which is perfectly where the number is on the bills in the picture) or look at the shorter sides.

In sweden we have different bill sizes so this isn't an issue. I mean, even though some bills might lie in the wrong direction or whatever, you still know its the same bill.

I'm not sure what you mean. There is no bill in sweden that is a perfect square making it irrelevant if it is printed horizontally or vertically.
You still count these and hand them over on the short side - as it is a rectangle. Same with folding.

I honestly think vertical bills would look cooler and make sense. The thing is that you keep them horizontally on your wallet but you present them to the cashier and the vending machine vertically.
A hybrid compromise like this design would make it better for everyone.

I like our current bills, but those are really growing on me. The "This currency is upheld by the integrity of its people" text on top of pictures of things we've done, hits some patriotic cords I don't normally have :V

I think the white/colored triangles might be for ATM machines and such to allow the machines to recognize the value of the bill quickly.
I miss when the Capitol didn't have all that damn scaffolding on it.
