The Imperial System works fine with me, I have no real need to change.
Here is the problem: We're reaching a point in society where the rest of the world now needs you to change. As far as I know, the US still uses imperial because 9 out of 10 Americans physically cannot understand metric. I know that fact's not true, but it's the only real reason I've ever heard come from an American's mouth. I shouldn't have to convert back to an archaic system that nobody uses anymore just because I have to assume that a world superpower does not know any better.

People are too stubborn and things like that aren't easy enough to just be passed.

The imperial system caused the crash of the 1998 Mars Climate Orbiter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Climate_Orbiter
America still clinging to the imperial system costs both the US and the rest of the world loads of money
Nobody is asking other countries to change to Imperial because the US does.
Because theres no reason for the rest of the world to change but theres plenty of reasons for the US to switch to metric
America still clinging to the imperial system costs both the US and the rest of the world loads of money
Switching to the metric system would cost us loads of money. Once. Then we'd be saving money. Unfortunately that seems to be enough to keep us on customary measures. Long-term thinking isn't exactly America's forte.

Wish it wasn't the case, I do prefer metric, but the logistics of that change would be astronomical. But hey I'm no professional, I could be wrong.

I posted a picture of a map and you guys start a fucking flame war over it holy shit

While Britain is technically metric, in reality it's slowly transitioned away from imperial into a hybrid system. In recent years, it's starting moving away from the hybrid system towards metric in order to help bring it more in line with the rest of the world. Additionally, Burma actually widely uses the metric system now, and there are talks in the government for adoption of the system. This would leave the United States as the sole country to use imperial.
The only stories I have about my granddad in the war is that he ate cats and that at some point he did his newspaper rounds with grenades in his mailbags. My uncle is a child of those that moved to New Zealand (his parents still live there). And we have family somewhere in Canada but communication with them is slow as the only way to communicate is by post.
That gives me a bit of interesting context. One of my great-uncles was a Lieutenant in the Canadian Army who was part of the liberation of the Netherlands. He met a woman there who he fell for, and they married almost on the spot. As there was still war to be won, he somehow made arrangements for her to move to Canada, whereupon she lived with his family way out in rural Ontario until he came back. Weird thing is, I don't think he spoke much Dutch and she didn't speak much of any English. He knew some German as far as I know (family had German heritage) but that was about it. It was apparently really rough for her in Canada because of this, and she spent a lot of time here really depressed until he returned. Unfortunately I don't keep much in touch with those relatives - from what I hear my great-uncle Victor was a bit of a dick. I didn't know things were that desperate though, which explains a lot of why that woman was so willing to just up and leave when she met him.

Theres not much the common man can do to help space travel, but all the people that support the imperial system need to do is stop being stubborn
Theres not much the common man can do to help space travel, but all the people that support the imperial system need to do is stop being stubborn
They do nothing but be stubborn for the sake of being stubborn. The Imperial system is an American thing, and by God how dare you touch American inventions and values.
I'll let you decide how to change every measuring cup, package instruction, road sign, speedometer, textbook, and the thinking patterns of 300 million people.
With time.
I'll let you decide how to change every measuring cup, package instruction, road sign, speedometer, textbook, and the thinking patterns of 300 million people.
I'm fully aware of that, but sometimes it feels like some people have a severe hatred of the Metric system for no particular reason. But when it lends to government funds being crashed into Mars or wherever that probe was supposed to go due to the usage of different measuring systems, I think you have a real problem if that could end up killing people in the future. It's not worth the effort of having to convert all these systems to whatever your company is using, when the rest of the world is using the Metric system. Even the UK has abandoned the Imperial system. It's annoying for everyone involved. Besides, the Metric system uses really logical steps of 1000, 100 or 10, whereas the Imperial system's scale steps are all over. [editline]9th May 2015[/editline] But I'm certain this argument is going to end up stale and boring some time soon so I suggest we drop it because discussing it on an internet forum isn't gonna bring the discussion where it's needed.
