Goddamn 2001 is such a great movie.
The book is great, but I thought the movie was incredibly boring and unexplaining. What did you like about it?
Honestly, for me the movie looked like a parage of incredible concept art rather than a story telling motion picture. The plot was somewhat mediocre imo, but the visual part was astounding, especially considering how old the movie is.
It's great on weed, I can tell you that. :v:

Scandinavian land is so majestic and gorgeous. I almost would hate to live there and have it watered down by seeing it every single day.

The second to last one looks like an atomic bomb explosion :v:
while we're on 2001, a bunch of long-lost production stills/illustrations were rediscovered a while back and they're really strong pieces of art by themselves, very cool stuff
Honestly, for me the movie looked like a parage of incredible concept art rather than a story telling motion picture. I almost would hate to live there and have it watered down by seeing it every single day.
We don't get these kind of skies every day, but in the summer, if there's light clouds and the conditions are right, you get this surrealistic orange/pink/purple sky that just blows your mind. But it's usually gone in less than an hour. Took this photo last year at the beach.

Imagine doing some deep-sea exploration and being sucked into that things tentacles via the current. Just thinking about that gives me shivers.
The book is great, but I thought the movie was incredibly boring and unexplaining. Also I could never finish the 2001 novel, it's god damn boring and poorly paced, Clarke should have fired whoever edited it. I'll finish it one day but the movie is far better. And I'm not just saying that because 2001 is my favorite movie of all time.

While I will admit that Clarke can be drawling at times, I don't think it compares to some of 2001's scenes that are just slow pans with silence or Blue Danube Waltz. There's also significantly less dialogue to be had so a lot of things go under explained. I saw the movie before reading the book, and I didn't get it at all. Which incidentally is why I read the novel series. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, its zero-g effects were well done considering the the novelty of it and the period. But I think of the many novel/film adaptions, 2001 is one of the not as great ones. Perhaps if the would have waited until after the novel, the movie may have done better having a concrete idea down.
The book is great, but I thought the movie was incredibly boring and unexplaining. What did you like about it?
it is literally full of interesting things to say despite being a mostly silent movie by suggesting and implying more than it tells through exposition. it promises to be a thriller and then totally subverts that. the film addresses itself in the first few minutes to the entire arc of human history and manages not to waste it by drawing on really powerful historical/visual/auditory motifs to tie it all together, is compositionally incredible in terms of the way scenes are shot, is complex and interesting in the sense that Bowman is a generic stand-in for humanity, HAL is the child, the unknown intelligence behind the monolith is the parent, etc. the movie's score is all music sourced from/directly references or implies allegory to the death of God, man usurping his position (think of Bowman as a Siegfried). you can go pretty far down that rabbit hole. either way it has something to say about teleology, progress, knowledge, the mind, the soul, whatever. i love 2001, you can read it like a book if you want, entertain thoughts about it instead of just watching a movie for its aesthetic pornography. i can get that it kind of blows because at the end of the day it's paper cutouts drifting in space for entire 7 minute scenes but it's generally regarded a masterpiece of modern cinema and that's for a reason i think everyone should give a shot at understanding.
