On May 28th 1982, at about 5pm, Joseph Billie Gwin, wanting to prevent World War III, forced his way into KOOL-TV studios in Phoenix, Arizona. After a 4 1/2 hour hostage crisis, KOOL TV finally relented and agreed to go live on the air at about 9:30 pm. Anchor man Bill Close, on the telephone with the police, and with a gun at his belly under the table, read the 20 minute statement live on the air to Phoenix viewers.
A young Arnold Schwarzenegger posing in his first competition. He is 18 years old.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was conscripted into the Austrian Army and was actually AWOL while he attended the competition. Training as a tank crewman, Schwarzenegger had the aspiration to become a bodybuilder, training for up to 3 hours a day on top of the regular training regimen put on by the Austrian military. There were no gyms on the base so Arnold had to get creative on his exercises in order to maintain and build his muscle.
The bodybuilding competition was located in Stuttgart and Arnold made the decision to go AWOL in order to attend it. Risking up to a month of solitary, Arnold escaped the base and managed to smuggle himself into Germany through freight trains, Arnold managed to arrive in Stuttgart. Using borrowed trunks from another bodybuilder, Arnold won the competition.
Upon returning to the base, he was thrown into solitary confinement. Then his officers brought him out and they berated him for leaving, however the mood quickly shifted as the officers were amazed at how Arnold won the competition in Germany. Arnold quickly tapped into the Austrian sense of discipline and hard work by accrediting the officers and the Austrian's training program. The officers decided to follow up by 'punishing' Schwarzenegger with kitchen duty, this gave Arnold access to extra food, including much-needed protein.
Arnold Schwarzenegger quickly became the example for the Austrian soldiers to follow. The officers also went out of the way to construct a portable gym for him, including sticking dumbbells inside of Arnold's tank compartments so that he can work out during field exercises.
With in a year of working at the base, Arnold claimed to have gained 25lbs of muscle.
I wanna how well it worked because seeing that happen to your friend doesn't sound very appealing
In 1915 there wasn't really anything approaching the war journalism and exposure you can see today. The government managed to pretty well convince people that going to war was glamorous, honourable and even fun. Groups of friends were encouraged to sign up together, go into the same unit and go bash some Boche heads in then head home in time for dinner. Propaganda was much more effective before the advent of freedom of information and things like the internet. In 1915 you had no way of knowing what was going on in France and Germany besides what the government and the media told you.

War was still very romanticized in the early 20th century. Even during WW2, you would have men in the US commit suicide when they found out that they were unfit to serve.
I am ofcourse fascinated by the design and engineering that goes into weapons and war equipment.
But im left wondering why we do it to ourselves.

Also in most of the major involved countries, the massive amount of casualties was a secret, because one state could not let its enemies know how low it was on manpower.
Try to imagine that people are dying in the millions on the front line, and you don't know anything about it besides the occasional person you know not returning.
The scale of the conflict was unheard of up until that point, so many of the men that were drafted and volunteered did not know what they were getting into.
That is why having unbiased media is so important. You can't protest against something you don't know is going on.
