The Reign of Terror tended to whack civilians rather than soldiers for the most part, and the fact that he kept himself to lower statuses in the military basically ensured his safety come the time when Madame le Guillotine was being put to work.
Most of the military men executed were generals, and mainly for "You lost this battle, you are an enemy to the [del]motherland[/del] republic, off with you"

Xenakis was a mathematician so his music has some pretty crazy rhythms and stuff. You even can see some intersting functions in his music if you plotted it all down.
Also Sorabji has some crazy shit for piano including a 4 hour piece which is full of technical virtuosity and 2 5 minute cadenzas.

One should definitely listen to some of these pieces just to see the outcome. Xenakis experimented heavily with timbres, not limiting himself to conventional instruments. He created some weird electronic music, including his own electronic reader that can read blotches of written stuff on a paper. Sounds super weird. (At least, I think it was Xenakis. My post tonal composer knowledge all kind of bundles up together since I hate the music)
Also, the Crumb piece Black Angels is hard to listen to, but his intent was really to work with the change in timbre as well, trying to focus the listener's interest on the change between sound sections rather than harmonic and melodic dimensions:

The effect is better with electronic instruments, but it's super neat to see the performers perform it.

Speaking of modern music, you'll find that in the "Classical" world, the specific style of music that composers compose is very wide spread, opposed to the cookie cutter examples from periods we can name in the past as "baroque" or "classical". Here's one of my favorite modern pieces, I promise you'll like it.

Most of them are on corners or at least in between other buildings. I'd say the ones that aren't were originally really old taverns for travelers.
Also you only find (nice) americanized pubs in downtown areas so that's another reason you'd always see them on corners.
