It's a CT scout (or scanogram or topogram, many names) - an x-ray image taken by a CT scanner that is used to plot the CT examination.

What it means by "quicksand" is simply breaking up the sand and making it easier to move through.

I believe it just siphons oxygen out of the water through its skin.
i can't see a siphon, but doesn't it have a breathing hole of some sort there behind its eye? it expands and contracts like it's taking in water

Nope. It actually has a pair of gills if i recall correctly.

It sucks water into its mantle cavity and expels it through its siphon, passing it over ctenidium (gill-like structures in molluscs) for gaseous exchange. Since its whole body is kinda buried in sand, I wonder how it can do this without flooding its mantle cavity with sand.
Forget thinking about how it breathes, think of all the sand going into it's eyes :suicide:
