The five Sullivan brothers were World War II sailors who, serving together on the USS Juneau (CL-52), were all killed in action on its sinking around November 13, 1942. Security required that the Navy not reveal the loss of Juneau or the other ships so as not to provide information to the enemy. Letters from the Sullivan sons stopped arriving at the home and the parents grew worried. The brothers' parents learned of their deaths on January 12, 1943. That morning, the boys' father, Thomas, was preparing for work when three men in uniform – a lieutenant commander, a doctor and a chief petty officer – approached his door. "I have some news for you about your boys," the naval officer said. "Which one?" asked Thomas. "I'm sorry," the officer replied. "All five."
Should note that the Sullivan brothers are the reason for the military's Sole Survivor policy. And that they had several ships named after them: USS The Sullivans (DD-537) in 1962 USS The Sullivans (DDG-68), an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.

The thing is, if aliens which were more influenced by their oceans' (if they have any) deep-sea biology ever encounter us, they'll be equally repulsed by us with our weird, dry, flimsy, tiny-eyed bodies as we will be by theirs. Assuming that evolution on different planets creates roughly similar creatures.

And also that they look up, not forward. they sit just below the maximum depth that light can penetrate and scan above them into the twilight for food.
Deep sea creatures fascinate me. Anyone got any more?
And also that they look up, not forward. they sit just below the maximum depth that light can penetrate and scan above them into the twilight for food.
you're right, but they can still look forward 'nother fun fact: the family name of that fish, Opisthoproctidae, is Greek for "Behind Anus."

This scary motherfucker is capable of bioluminescence, but in a very odd way. It "flashes" which disorients and potentially blinds the prey temporarily, giving it a chance to attack. When it feels threatened, it inverts its "umbrella" over its body presenting its spines (which are actually soft and harmless) and inflates itself to intimidate or confuse the predator. This is called the "pumpkin" posture.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giant Isopod It's a bug the size of a fucking pineapple, what more could you possibly ask for? If you ever bring up brutalist architecture and someone's like, "no", you should show them:
