I really love Killzone 2 and 3 for their extreme grimdark setting.
Also future industrial.
Sci-fi Militaristic utopias and unreal tournament's go-absolutely-anywhere locations
Grim / oppressive dangerous post-apocalyptic, modern or future.
Stuff like Earth from Elysium or settings like STALKER and DayZ
Several "grim" fantasy styles. Examples:
- Witcher
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Castlevania
- Dark Souls
Alien Fantasy(Think Morrowind)
High/Low fantasy(So long as the setting isn't earth)
Dieselpunk/Retro-future
Post-Apocalypse(Preferably like the last of us, where everything's overgrown)
I tend to like virtual settings. Think Tron (except less bad recently).
I love medieval city setting, like a sprawling city metropolis the size of London but with middle ages Bavarian architecture.
This is a tricky one. I'm thinking modern-day urban areas such as LA. And in terms of looks just within videogames, I like the "cartoony" appearance.
Italian renaissance cyberpunk
Modern Day, but with medieval and futuristic elements. Like, a castle controlled by goblins and orcs and they have access to cybernetics and robots in addition to magical properties being stormed by a platoon of nanobot enhanced soldiers, mages and just regular military. Closest game that fits that bill that I can think of is Shadowrun.
Probably a Half Life 2 style setting.
Hi-Scifi or Realistic futuristic settings.
Permanent Death realism settings with high risk/low/moderate reward
Heaven VS Hell VS Earth
Dark Fantasy or Morrowind-type settings.
Cyber-punk.
More Blade Runner.
Edit:
Or a Miami setting, like what the OP said. A GTA HD trilogy (with III, vice city and san Andreas) would be nice.
Lovecraftian story + atmosphere

The story is usually around a typical, regular civilian who stumbles upon something he/she shouldn't know a thing about (aka Forbidden Knowledge). Eventually they get involved and experience this great load of traumatic and impossible events which will lead to their suicide because they cannot handle the weird reality they have seen.
More about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovecraftian_horror sadly there are nearly no games based on this.
A sci fi setting where science and technology aren't a huge focus. Dune is the only thing I can think of.

are you a fan of the penumbra series? the 7th picture reminds me a lot of the opening level of penumbra overture

How is it scifi then?
How is it scifi then?
There are many branches of scifi and some don't necessarily focus on science or technology. Dune is actually a very good example of this and is unequivocally and almost universally accepted as science fiction even though it doesn't focus on science and technology primarily.
The Martian Chronicles is another example of this, as well.
Firefly.
Favorite movie setting would be be the 80s vision of the future. The 50s has this optimistic, utopian vision of the future where we'd have flying cars and robot maids. The 80s vision of the future was kind of like that, but way more dystopian and corrupt. The 80s was a time of excess, distrust of the federal government, and declining moral values. The future portrayed in Hollywood films of the 80s era kind of reflected this. Examples are: Robocop, Terminator, Alien, Back to the Future, The Fifth Element, and Total Recall
Favorite game setting would be in places like the Resident Evil mansion. Loved how you were in this elegant, sophisticated, high class mansion filled with mystery and puzzles to solve. Anyone know of other games like this?

Uh, that was 1997.

The 7th guest
Urban areas but with some wilderness areas like POSTAL or GTA V/SA or even Red Dead Redemption
I prefer an 80s Miami setting.
Hotline Miami?
I liked Reach from Halo. The rugged, wild landscape mixed with rugged futuristic technology.
Except Bioshock was like, the 1910's. At least Infinite was.
How is it scifi then?
Well the setting still has science and tech, but due to a war with AI they are weary of taking it too far again.
Except Bioshock was like, the 1910's. At least Infinite was.
Infinite was 1910-ish.
Rapture from Bioshock 1 and 2 was built in the late 40s, finished in the early 50s, and the first game takes place in 1960.
Ideal game would be a Fallout FPS with the following gameplay elements:
1) Call of Pripyat's gunplay + inventory system (i know the Pipboy's iconic and all, but it's a fucking pain in the ass to use for PC users), STALKER series had excellent gunfights and variety of guns.
2) Elder Scroll series' open world with many caves/buildings to explore.
3) Metro Last Light's graphics/sound (Bridge level perfectly conveyed the post-apocalyptic setting, constantly wiping rain off your mask while straining to hear the growls of monsters as thunder booms around you)
Fallout is easily the best post-apocalyptic setting.
Metro's second though. And I guess if you can call S.T.A.L.K.E.R. post-apocalyptic, which it really kinda isn't, then its tied.
