No mention yet of Evangelion? Shame on you, FP. I'm voting both, actually. The Western ones tend to make more military sense, but the Eastern ones tend to have better artistic design.
Silly Timber Wolf pilot. That's why you engage an Atlas from a distance. I like this stuff, it actually looks built for combat, not for show. And it looks like a vehicle instead of power armor.

Generally speaking western mechs would be more practical in real life. Eastern mechs seems like a good way to accidentally step on allies or civilians.

Western mechs dont look like huge humans in pretty pink power armor, they look like military vehicles. And as such are a bazillion times cooler.
This thread makes me want to get out my old Gundam figures and set them up all over my desk.
Maybe you guys could help me. I've been trying to find a battletech mech I frequently used on the boardgame. Its helmet design looked EXTREMELY similar to an astronaut helmet and had one arm cannon with a missle launcher on the opposite shoulder I think.
I found some pictures of High-Quality Gundam models, and they look fantastic: Whoever this guy is, he's really good at making models look sexy. I've got more, and even a link to the site if anyone is interested. (A lot of the text on the site is Japanese(Or similar), but if you know some of the Mobile suits by name, it shouldn't be much of a problem.) I also apologize for this large image dump, I just love mechs so much, and I wanted to share.
I found a Battlemech, known as the Awesome Mech. Most be awesome. Yeah, that's pretty awesome. http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Awesome
I've been into the whole mech thing since my childhood. No way I could diverge. They actually seem like killing machines. maybe it's because they walk all slow, but I love that, I love the sense of power these mechs demonstrate. Felt so good shootin somebody with a gauss gun and watching the entire mech flail back.

Chromehounds bitches. Ironically this most mechanical and "western" of mech brands is of eastern origin.
A bit more skewed to Western probably explains why this is my favorite [editline]10th December 2010[/editline] Unpainted weapons :v:
Chromehounds bitches. Ironically this most mechanical and "western" of mech brands is of eastern origin.
It may be the most, but it didn't start it. That's why I refer to it as "western". If you can prove me wrong I'd gladly be wrong, but I'd still consider the Battletech the original Western Mech franchise because of how it lead to the Mechwarrior Series. Also, have a large amount of customization in the Mechwarriro series as well. You just can't change the chassis.
Nostalgia'd hard in this thread, I used to play MechWarrior 2 on my Sega Saturn. Those were the days...

MechWarrior Mercenaries has been out for a while.

I prefer Western Mechs for lovely grittiness. Although Eastern ones can't all be too bad, especially some from Ghost in the Shell.
I don't really understand how a bipedal mech is more effective than a tank.
Eastern mechs: hey look at me i'm all cool looking and shit, but I am very ineffective. Western mechs: HOLY FUCK EVERYTHING JUST DIES THAT IS IN FRONT OF ME, I AM MADE OUT OF WEAPONS.
I like both, although i don't really like big ones like in Mechwarrior. W40K Titans are awesome though.

They just look cooler, hence the love for them and the misguided defence of anything larger than a human-sized robot being useful.
why do we have to go into a debate on practicality? why can't we just agree that mecha are just plain awesome?
Japans sure know a thing or two about that stuff. Gunmen (not shitty gundamz) pwn all the others any day
Only thing better than two legs is four [img_thumb]http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/6/8/8/7/7/9/Mastodon_Final.jpg.jpg[/img_thumb] Thumb'd for size

I'm sorry people, but we need some fucking armageddon in this bitch. Why put spikes and rockets and shit on a robot when you can make it into a fucking castle?
Eastern mechs seem to be far more decorative with an emphasis on the design and curves looking cool. Western mechs seem to be far more practical with fewer structural weaknesses, better armour coverage and a much easier manufactured design. Eastern mechs look cool but in an arms race situation with similar parameters on either side, Western mechs would be more effective.
