What's with anime, Facepunch and wanting to be a girl

I want to be in a girl.

Your beard dose that for you
So in my quest to watch anime that people expect you to have watched by now, I blitzed through Spice and Wolf season 1 and I'm currently in the middle of season 2. I watched it subbed like I usually do but decided to give dubbed a try. They were pretty darn good, even if the pacing was a bit off at times. I think both the English and Japanese voice actors fit Holo's personality rather well. Lawrence's dub voice actor was good but sometimes sounded a bit...well, fake.
I really like the two main characters because they're so---well, human (well one of them is). I think I watch too much anime where the antagonists either don't act like people usually do in situations or emotionally unstable with no real wit to them. Lawrence has wit, cunning, and is a bit devious, but still shows his humanity like greed and making mistakes (not trusting Holo during that whole fool's gold business). And when he sees Holo in her true form the first two times he freaks out. Many (not all, of course) other anime antagonists would keep their cool and say something like "I ain't afraid of no giant wolf." Fuck that, just about anyone would freak out the first couple of times, or at least be very unnerved.
Holo, for her part, is proud, pompous, intelligent, and teasing without it seeming artificial or annoying. This is also a fresh breath of air for many female characters in other anime, who sometimes have low self-esteem or has the "gentle, caring" personality. Not saying that they're automatically bad characters---look at Nia from Gurenn Lagann. But even then Holo shows a bit of humanity (such as it is) like fear of being alone and professing not knowing everything in the world, despite calling herself "Holo the Wise".
Course the anime wasn't perfect. I think the pacing was a bit odd sometimes, and the animation in the first season was at times less then stellar. But I somehow got into the dilemmas of the characters, even though economics in general is a boring subject for me. I won't pretend I understood everything they said but I got the gist of them---usually.
I'm still in the middle of watching season 2, but for now I think I can say this is one of the better animes I've seen recently.
that doesnt have anything to do with aniem and the animation cant even compare to the fine arts of aniem.

Also, which are the best/worst translators? I read somewhere that Underwater and Commie are terrible, is this true?
it's all variable depending on who on the team is working on whatever series.

Also watch Daily Lives of High School Boys.

Just finished Colorful. Really good movie. The end of it [sp]surprised me a lot, I'd had it in my head the whole movie that Makoto had really died, and some other kid had inhabited his body. Just as they want you to think of course. Had wondered thoughout how he was ever going to find out his sin though. Really glad it had a happy ending.[/sp]
Really great animation. Scenery porn galore.

I usually find Commie and Underwater to be pretty competent. As Mr Glynn said, there are certain groups whose subbing quality really depends on who in the team is working on the show. From experience, Commie and Horriblesubs (which is a rip from Crunchyroll subs) are most prone to this sort of quality differentiation, but this is mainly due to how big they are, and overall they're quite good.
The only truly bad group that comes to mind is Hadena. From a review of their subbing ability:
Hadena – F, LS-?
Hahaha I only watched it for the lulz. They actually edited for v1 this time, but it’s still guesslation. I would estimate over 50 lines of comical mishearing and over 150 lines of mistranslations in an estimated 500-line script. Why would you pick such a hard series to translate when you don’t even speak Japanese?
Go sub Digimon.
*LS-grade impossible to determine because they didn’t really translate.
Some good groups that come to mind would be Mazui, UTW, BSS, and GG for quirkier shows that require a more liberal translation; however it's not like these groups have subbed everything, so groups like Horriblesubs and Commie are usually reliable enough, and have the pro of releasing their subs rather quickly after the show airs.
