I don't like ratings. They're too influenced by personal opinion rather than their actual quality. (Brace for arguments about ratings) A person that loves Action/Mecha/FIGHTAN anime might not have the same opinion on a show as someone who likes Romance/Comedy/Drama anime. When people ask me what shows they should watch, I just ask them what shows they like or what kind of show they want to watch. I look through my MAL list to see if I've watched any similar or recommendable shows based on what they tell me.
That's reasonable and I was kinda expecting an answer like that; Do you think you could maybe recommend me something?

Which is why I rate objectively and subjectively at the same time. Objectively the overall quality of a work can limit just how far down it can go or how high. Subjective feelings will surpass the objective meanings, but obviously not completely since subjective feelings will be affected by the objective points.
Also I think it's wrong to recommend something you didn't like, that completely goes against the whole point of recommending.
I recommend shows I would recommend, and if the taste is quite different or I know the person has a very different taste (likes shows I dislike) I will recommend shows I think are good (but not recommendable) and OK.

Itazura na Kiss
Aria the Animation
Hidamari Sketch
K-ON!
Azumanga Daioh
Lovely Complex
Aoi Hana
Bartender
Genshiken
Bakuman
Candy Boy
Kamichu!
Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl
Kimi ni Todoke
Kuragehime
Planetes

Usagi Drop
Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~
Also since you liked Cowboy Bebop you should watch Trigun.
hentai= pervert/perverted, hentai jokes = perverted jokes
so yes
echhi = perverted, not hentai
[editline]7th March 2012[/editline]
hence why non-h stuff that's still sexual is labeled "ecchi" and not "hentai"

Technically non-h stuff can't be labeled ecchi because the h in h-anime/ h-manga is pronounced ecchi.
But yeah hentai in the west is pornographic and ecchi is perverted.
Well that cleared things up for me. I'm not sure if I'll check out Golden Boy just yet, or at least it's not on my list of priority anime right now.

what the fuck is a sub-fetish
http://myanimelist.net/profile/OniisanBro
I'm a lightweight.
what the fuck is a sub-fetish
a preference that deviates from the norm enough to be seen as a fetish, but is included in two or more of the more defined fetishes
bare in mind a fetish is just a method of classification

You're always supposed to be recommending based on what they want though, not on your opinion, but you can tell them your opinion on it. If someone absolutely loved Lucky Star and asked for other slice of life moe shows, I'd say "Watch K-On". I didn't like K-On, and I thought Lucky Star was okay mostly because of the humor in it. That's exactly what I would say to them. "If you liked Lucky Star, then you might like K-On. I didn't think it was as funny though." Even then, I would also tell them "I haven't seen many slice-of-life shows though, so I can't recommend all that much or promise I they are the best recommendations."

Wrong and right. You're supposed to recommend what they want based on what your opinion is about the shows.
Your example recommandation is the kind of recommandations you make when you only recommend one show or two, and usually in person. It's a bit different with lists, then you just at max do what you did, add a small note on it. Or what I did, tell him why I would recommend those shows.
I've already covered the whole "completely different taste" situation.
