I was a Church of England christian and went to church until I was 15, never believed in it though
When I was born, I was brought up Lutheran.I was pretty obsessed with being a good person to the point of self righteousness.
I became an atheist when I was 12 and learned about other religions. I began to question my religion, for every religion was so different, but all of them claimed that they absolutely were the truth, however, that could not be possible. I realized that I had no proof of god, therefore I abandoned religion.
I became an agnostic at 14 when I noticed although there was no proof that god existed, there was no proof against an omnipotent being, therefore I saw it to be just as arrogant to be on either side of the spectrum.
At 15, I read into Buddhism and saw that it left followers to search for the answer to that question themselves, along with philosophies on life that I completely agreed with.
At 17, I became an agnostic again when thinking about Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha's) quote "I would rather have scholars than followers." and his general philosophy on finding knowledge for yourself and realized that the world was too complicated to restrict yourself to an ideology. I took a respectful leave to Buddhism, although some of the practices I still partake in. I do actions that are against Buddhism (EX: Smoking hookah), but I still feel close to it.
I know most other facepunch members are secular, as I am, but I want to hear what lead you guys down the paths that you have taken.
Why the fuck do you need to make such long first posts?
Nobody reads them, I guarantee.
Well… Born by two atheist parents, I quickly got indoctrinated by our previously Christian school. At about 4th grade (Age: 9 or something?) I started boycotting the Christmas church-trip, questioning the religion and why we had to learn about that “crap”. All of this happened due to a friend of mine’s influential Atheist brother, who told us to break free and started to teach us stuff we didn’t even understand. When I hit 13 or 14, I started becoming an activist against organized religion in general. It’s hard when the school-system in general used to be focusing too much on Christianity. My sense of logic dictated that religion is hogwash.
Religion should be personal and not a part of the government ++… If you believe in some hokey old religion, keep it to yourself… I’m not interested.
Christian, still am always will be.
I forgot, I was rastafarian (and still partially am :smug: )
