I am a direct descendant of William White, who came to America as a pilgrim on the Mayflower.
Another family member, around the same time period, was the leader of a group that waged war against the 'injuns.
mixed feelings
I should also add that my grandpa was able to escape out of a POW camp from the Japanese
Im slightly related to Donald Trump
I'm related to this dude called Petter Dass: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petter_Dass
My grandfather was adopted. His biological father was a singer, and his biological mother a maid that got swooned pretty hard backstage.
Any more stories on the Italian mobster/ww1 veteran?
I'm distantly related to hugh mercer
Not as flashy as some of these other stories, but as far as I know my fourth great-grandfather was Serbian and became a POW of the Bulgarian army during the Serbo-Bulgarian war in 1885. While he was in Bulgaria, he fell in love with a young woman and somehow managed to marry her instead of returning to Serbia. My family (including me) still carries his Serbian last name, making it more than 100 years old.
Also, I think I had a great, great-grandfather who was supposedly one of the guards for the treasury of the Kingdom of Bulgaria some time in 21st century. A famous story is that by the end of WW1 he had almost no reason to go to work, since the place was pretty much empty.
Other than that, I have a lot of people in my family line who served in the wars, more so in WW1 than in WW2. One interesting story is that of my great, great-grandfather, who appearently joined the army all the way in the beginning of Bulgaria's involvement in WW1. He somehow managed to survive through maybe 3 years of heavy fighting on the Macedonian front, but was captured near the end of the war. When he returned to Bulgaria, he had lost so much weight and overall looked so crappy that his mother couldn't recognize him at first.
Though some of the family memories have sadly been lost or just mixed up during the socialist era. WW1 wasn't really looked at very positively, and I have at least one great-, great-grandparent who was sent to a labour camp for his views. Plus veterans in the family didn't tend to talk much about what they had seen.
My grandma survived the siege of Leningrad when she was little. Also my grandpa is the weirdest jew in the whole world, because instead of saving money he always prefer to give them.
Gramps was the vice-chairman of the Slovak Democratic Party throughout the 90s.
Reading some old news, he was apparently doing a pretty good job, neat.
My great great grandpa migrated to Ellis island from the Netherlands in 1913. We also may be blood relatives to the rosevelts and the van raalte families.
My great grandfather on my mum's side served in the Winter War, my grandfather on my dad's side was a captain in the British army, my dad a staff sergeant, me a lowly private in the Finnish army, and my younger brother disqualified from service due to constant, dreadful migraines.
On the other hand, meme mastery has increased inversely proportionate to age :v:
iirc my great grandfather was a sailor on a Dutch navy ship during ww2. I think my dad once told me it sank, and he survived, but obv i'm not sure if that's true
Also my dad's uncle died while being forced to work on the Burma railway by the Japanese
According to some of my relatives I've met, my mom's side of the family is blood related to Eva Braun.
whats a good website to look this shit up
Fuck it, i got plenty.
On my grandfather's side, i'm a descendent of Sir Walter Scott, and my grandfather is one hell of a charicter. Survived his house being bombed in Glasgow during the blitz, survived falling off a crane at the local port here etc. Dude even had dinner with the last Shah of Iran, as he was part of an economic exchange program with canada. As far as i know, he was the foreman on a job site for a logging company logging some Iranian forests. And because Islamic country, i don't know if this has changed, but at the time Iran had no concept of accidental death. If someone died of anything but old age or whatever, according to the laws, someone has to be tried for murder.
So of course some worker got off his ass on something, and decided to take a flying leap off of an observation tower. Landed on something unpleasant and took his own head off. And since my grandfather was in charge of the site, the local police storm his house at 3am and haul him off for murder. Long story short canada gets in Iran's face for being morons and the Shah pardons him. Then the islamic revolution happens and he and his family are forced to escape. They ended up fleeing up the black sea and through russia, eventually returning to the west through East Berlin.
He's a proper man that guy. Y'don't fuck with him.
Dad's a dual juno award winner, has stories from all over. Chummed around with Rod Stewart and John Baldry in england, blew up a curry house by accident while he was over there. Having Andrew Loog Oldham around for tea wasn't an uncommon occurrence when i was a kid, hell i just picked up the phone earlier today and it was warran cann from ultravox. Probably the most dramatic thing that happened to dad was almost getting whacked by the ontario mob for another member of the band's debts owed at the time. The Angel's got a new local mob boss who decided to show off how serious he was by enforcing some accounts. Unfortunately for him, you do not fuck with musicians in the mob, because without the musicians, your clubs 'n shit stop getting customers. Supposedly the Californian head office of the Angels heard of this, called it off at the last moment and the upstart had a bad day.
Dude's got all sorts of stories i probably shouldn't tell.
Hell, you can see my uncle adam in a lot of the D-day footage. So that's something
's a lot to live up to frankly
