Do you choose to be male or female in video games?

I always play as male because I am one.
Depends on the kind of game and the design of each sex.

Not if they have unrealistically proportioned tits.
If I have the choice, then usually female to be perfectly honest. Mostly because there are too many games out there with gruff male protagonists who have gravelly voices and manly stubble. It gets a bit samey after a while for me.
I do play male characters sometimes, but I don't need to have a male character to be immersed, I just need a believable character to play as.
Male because the patriarchal society has conditioned me to playing the same gender for fear of being branded "that gay fgt"
Honestly I play as both, though I'll more likely play as male if I am capable of making a character that looks like me, or one of my favorite actors/other game characters.
I always play as a male negro if there is a negro option. I do this for immersion because the inner me is one.
my character in SR the third was a woman just because of the russian/eastern european voice option.
more generally i've started tending towards picking female characters where I can simply because I play enough men in all the games where you can't choose
I guess I wouldn't in a game where female PCs were represented badly but i don't really have any of those i think??? [maybe mass effect]?
in anime-type fighting or regular games I pick female for my own reasons.
But most of the time I am a male.
If I want to play a game for real like Fallout 3 for example I try to make the character look as close as me irl. If I just want to fuck around I choose either male or female.
If the main character is voiced, I pick the gender whose voice actor pulls off the lines the best. Otherwise, I just pick randomly, since I can't self-insert myself into a character like others can.
I only play as a female when I want to get some sort of kick that I usually don't get from the usual stuff I get off to
To all the people saying they can't 'connect' to their character if it's the opposite sex. Is it really that hard? I have no problems with inserting myself into the character regardless of gender/race/etc.
Everyone isn't you, you know.
Mostly play as male, because I am one, but if there are specific perks to being female that I think would improve the game for me, then I'll play as it. An example of this is the female character in borderlands, I played as her because she was closest to the kind of character I wanted.
Girl because most the MMO's I play the guys are bat shit ugly.
Female so I can see bouncing ass in Skyrim

I'm asking because I don't understand the difficulty.
I usually pick female characters. Especially when female characters are smaller, they take up less space on the screen and if it's multiplayer it's easier to hide.
female butte
I always play female in singleplayer (fallout3)
It depends on the game
In Halo: Reach I pick the female because she has nicer looking armour imo
But mostly I pick males if I just want to get into playing the game
Female, I want to both imagine being and understand women.
In short; See through the eyes of one, like Samus Aran
It depends on the game. If it's something like Planetside I go male because it's weird to be in first-person and hear a female voice. In Saints Row or really anything third-person I play a female character because I'd rather not stare at a dude's ass for 20+ hours. Also in Saints Row 3 and 4 most of the clothes favor female characters.
Female whenever possible.
I always pick female characters.
I think I'm just insane, I can live with that.
If the game's protagonist is advertised as a certain gender (Mass Effect, Skyrim, Halo: Reach, etc.) I'll usually pick that gender for my first playthrough because it feels canon (And usually their look/voice/class too). Other then that it just depends on the nature of my character.
Depends, I have an archetype for each gender and I pick one depending on which one I want to be. I'll use Mass Effect for this example.
Female Renegade always. There ain't no Paragon option to be seen, if I play a woman Shep it's going to be a complete and utter asshole playthrough. It's kind of an outlet, a way to disconnect my own opinions and kind of watch the character on a murderous and sadistic rampage.
Male Neutral p. much always. Here I go more for my personal opinions. Being male it helps me connect with the character more and gets me more immersed. I end up being p. neutral but tend to go a bit towards the Paragon.
In other games it follows roughly the same pattern. Female characters are ruthless killing machines without pretty much any kind of conscience and badasses of the highest caliber. Males are the more connectable and down-to-the-ground sort, generally more neutral in good-evil alignment and also more indecisive.
It depends. Sometimes I play as men, sometimes I play as women. Personally, if I play as an attractive woman character, I find that I am more likely to survive because some sort of protective instinct makes me play a little better. Case and point, in Left 4 Dead, I live longest as Zoey because I care more for saving the chick. If I play as Bill, Louis, or Francis, I tend to die because I'm always trying to save Zoey. It's weird.
tl;dr both because I'm weird.
