I find it strange people find this concept impossible since, for many people, this is a way of life.

For motivations behind not having sex, there are the issues of diseases, unwanted pregnancies, and various social reasons (possible emotional pain on either parties, cheating and its side-effects, or just sleeping with someone really embarrassing). And, of course, this isn't possible without a partner, so some people don't even have the chance to do this.

For motivations behind not masturbating, orgasms release prolactin, a peptide hormone that suppresses dopamine, the hormone responsible for motivation. Over time, it's possible for somebody to build a dependency on this prolactin release. Others just find the very concept icky and gross, as anyone who's ever had a nocturnal emission can vouch.

Hell, a year without sex or masturbation could benefit someone.
