Survey completed.
I was going to fill it in but that would just prove the stereotype.
What would prove the stereotype? Your answers or filling it in?
Diddley done.
oh yeah I finished also yeah if you post the stuff about the new headlines I'm the one who said "Media fearmongering at it's best"
Did it. I wrote tonnes for that last section :V
Done. I left a rather large rant on the last question.
Done.
Just finished. And if I were your mom, I might reconsider adding the PC to the list of consoles. Yes, it's not made exclusively for games, but it's still something that a lot of people use for games. I just feel like it would be more accurate if she included it.
i admire your mother for bringing light on this issue much luv to OP
She also told me that a lot of you had some interesting comments about the newspaper headlines, I'm going to ask her for them and I can post them here if you guys want?
I want to see them, should be interesting. Also I did it as well.
Filled it in

i actually enjoyed filling this survey
I took the survey, and for the last question I linked her to two articles where video games have actually saved lives.
Just waiting on her to send me the comments which you guys have posted. Thanks everyone for doing this it means alot to me!
Finished. What's your mother getting a degree in?
uh
my mother is currently doing a degree in sociology,
Done.
Done :) Will also be interested to view the comments made, and the finished report when she has done it. I hope she gets a good grade!
I hope my rant gets featured. I called a lot of people idiots in it, do you think she'll like it?
Completed it. :) This survey was enjoyable. Not only because the subject is gaming, but some things really go for me that stand in the survey.
Right, here they are, an excellent read, well done guys you've done me proud. Don't say which one is yours, it's anonymous. View 5457567 I don't think violence is because of computer games there have to be other issues. View 5457818 These are a very narrow selection of news stories, specifically selected to give a negative impression of video games. Also, the wording of the heading of this question is emotive in nature and heavily implies a link between violence and video games, while providing no evidence to back this claim. View 5459011 Shocking! It is unbelievable how much influence computer games can have on people. View 5460348 People killed people before video games. Many people in society play video games and only a few go out and commit crimes afterwards. View 5461486 I think it speaks volumes in all these cases about their need to blame their own actions and responsibilities on something else, an "easy" way out. The fact that the first 2 cases are children playing games that are certified above their age may mean there are further issues with homelife and upbringing. Gaming is just another media for storytelling and an enjoyable pastime. It can not be solely attributed to acts of violence. View 5478263 Computer games are an easy scape goat. In cases where people are "inspired" by games to kill people, there is an underlying mental instability in the first place that was in need of addressing, rather than computer games brainwashing them. This is a prime example of todays society blaming others rather than taking responsibility for their own actions! View 5478875 The fact that video games are being blamed for these horrible acts is ridiculous. There's obviously something wrong in the head of those people, and if they are capable of shooting up a school, they are going to do it anyway, regardless of playing video games. Millions of people play video games, but there are only a few of these horrible crimes, and if the criminals play video games, it's suddenly "VIDEO GAMES MAKE KILLERS". It's just stupid. The government needs a scapegoat. View 5479153 I feel that in all these headlines, it isn't the games or the games industry that must be blamed. The games have a message, and how you take take that message is up to you. Maybe some people are more susceptible to interpret games as glamorizing violence. In the third headline, the woman (Mrs. Strange) was trying to win a Nintendo Wii console for her kids. Her determination ended up killing her. Should trying to please kids be outlawed? Also, in question 19 it says to tick all that apply, yet you can only tick one. So fix that. Thank you and good luck. View 5479256 "Doom" kicks ass! Lol @ the last one. View 5479468 I personally find the whole "video games are destroying our children"-scare pathetic. I see no reason why Doom should be used as an argument. The Wii contest was more likely about winning the console rather than the "OH MAN I'MMA PLAY CASUAL GAMES"-idea. The 16 year old surely was addicted, something that cannot a console cannot be blamed for, nor the creators. View 5480439 Those people are sick. View 5480674 It think most of these headlines could apply to other things than video games. For instance, the brothers in headline number two could just as easy told the investigators they were inspired by violent movies etc. In many of these headlines, the connection to gaming seems irrelevant to the story, as similar cases of violence can be found in almost any environment. View 5481246 Some people are sick. I don't think its the game's fault. If the child's parents are so busy and whatnot, the game console will do the parenting for that child, making him violent. View 5481730 i think it's bullshit that video games provoke violence, if someones going to do some stupid shit they're obviously fucked psychologically and woulda done it anyway View 5482039 All of these stories ignore real journalism and just use current hot topics to grab at attention, video games don't cause the problems, lack of self control and judgment do. View 5482206 These are people with some kind of brain damage since they have thought that if they could do it in the game then it would be ok in real life. I would never think that and none of my friends would either. View 5482305 Media fearmongering at it's best. View 5482326 It's horrible that people do these terrible things and say that they were inspired by video games they've played. Of course playing a lot of video games (some of them pretty violent) has affected me in different ways, but I don't see how having a rather short temper has anything to do with the fact that I play video games. I see games as a way to escape stress and troubles in my regular life. So it's pretty much a lifesaver to me. View 5482375 As it has been proven, video games do not make people more violent. For many (like me) it helps me by allowing me to put the rage into games instead on people. Some people may become more violent from video games, but as said, most don't. View 5482201 These headlines all seem to try and point blame only on video games. Sure, some people claim that they are inspired to try these violent acts from performing them on their televisions, but there are other issues that underlie these violent tendencies. Many of the students who perform these massacres have had pent up emotions from other sources, either from social pressures, violence, or neglect at home, etc. that lead them to perform these horrible acts. The video games just give them another input from the media, whether this input is good or bad. Also, I think that this survey is a good way to get input from others, since most polls can be quite limited. I hope that your research goes well. View 5482443 The problem is not the videogames, it's the people who played them where insane. View 5482881 People are all different, some are very easily manipulated into believing things are OK if they happen on TV/in a game. That, however, isn't everyone! Most people know full and well that just because you can kill in games you can't in real life. To make an example, the most violent person i know hates games. Not every action need to be influenced by something, some people simply are more violent than others. View 5483047 I'm thinking... america. View 5484102 Gaming can be a problem, but only to certain people. Many of the people mentioned in the news you mentioned have actually had medical histories of disorderly behaviour, OCD, ADHD, compulsive mental problems and in general, were not entirely mentally helathy. I game regularily and there is nothing wrong with me. Some of the incidents mentioned actually make me feel sick. The incidnets mentioned are not videogames or violent movies faults, they are part of the human nature. Some people cannot excercise slef-restraint and have mental problems. Those are the factors we face when coming to terms with these incidents. Video games are an outlet for these people (and maybe a convient excuse). Throughout this survey, I have felt like you have constantly tried to push the target audience into "ticking a box" which critises gaming (the half page on "hitting"). Surely a smaller section would have been prudent? For your information, I am a straight A student and look forward to attending university, I alos have plenty of friends. I have trespassed once accidently and moved when notified I was in fact on private land. Not all gamers are anti-social, criminals. That is exactly what I felt when filling out this quesionaire due to the questions asked.
I think I won it.
