• Do you believe in E.T. life?

Anyone who actually believes we are the only planet with any kind of life on it in the entire fucking universe is literally retarded. The chances of that being the case are so low that even 'astronomical' fails as an adjective. [editline]12th March 2011[/editline]
I didn't say that. I'm just trying to say that you people present your guesses and speculations as facts when they clearly aren't. That's how religious people argue.
You do realise that a good chunk of physics actually remains theoretical, right? Because while the maths says it works, we can't actually definitively say why or how it does? Does that mean we're also idiots for believing in widely-accepted physical theory?
If they are as bad as the Atari version, I really don't hope so...
I do. Too bad we'll probably never see them.
Holy shit, you are completely missing my point. I'm not saying you're idiots. I too believe in ET-life. I believe it is quite common and that there are intelligences out there far more advanced than us. But I only BELIEVE that. I have NO proof and I can't give ANY statistics to support my belief. Thus I do not present my beliefs as FACTS like you do. You say anyone who doesn't believe in ET-life are idiots. That's not cool. Why can't the chances of life forming be so astronomically small that it practically only happens once in a universe? What is it that states the opposite? Nothing so far, since we don't know how rare life is.
Its obvious that there isnt anything magical about life...
How is it obvious? We don't know how it's formed or exactly what requirements are necessary.
Well, it's creationist thinking to think that there's no life except on Earth, as it's blindingly obvious that there's life elsewhere. In this case, I don't believe, because there's no need to believe in something that's blindingly obvious. To me, believing in aliens is like believing in the postman; there's no need to since they already exist. The postman doesn't post letters because you believe in him, he posts them because it's his job. The Postman Principle can be applied to gods if they were real. If gods were real, there'd be no need to believe in their existence, because there'd be no doubt that they were there. To sum up, I don't "believe" in aliens, but I know that they exist somewhere and somewhen in spacetime, in some form. It's obvious, isn't it?
It's obvious, isn't it?
How is it obvious? Intuition is not science.
No N-O
What? That's like saying "Do you believe in clouds" Apart from the fact that extraterrestrial life on a small scale has already been found elsewhere, it's a dark-ages viewpoint to think that there couldn't be life anywhere but where we are. [editline]12th March 2011[/editline] Plus what ironman said.
the fact that extraterrestrial life on a small scale has already been found elsewhere,..
Wait, when did this happen?!
I don't believe it exists, I know it exists.
We can't prove it so it's not there. I don't care if its likely or not, no scientific evidence means its not there. That's what "rational" people like to say, right ? :smug:
There are more then billion of systems and planets out there, there is no way we are on the only planet with life.
there is no way we are on the only planet with life.
Again, I have not seen anyone here come with a single argument as to why this must be. Counting the number of planets is no determinant itself for the scarcity of life. It's simple maths. You cannot estimate odds for something of which you don't know the rate of success. Period.
I KNOW they must, there is no way Earth was a one off, out of the 900 trillion billion quadrillion trillion million billion trillion's of Galaxies, each holding X amount of Solar Systems, each having X amount of planets, it is ignorant to think otherwise.
You can't know for 100% sure. If so, where is your evidence ?
Probability speaks for itself, and yes I do know 100%. Would bet my left testicle on it.
Then you will be waiting for a long time pal. And evidence doesnt speak for itself, invalid argument is invalid.
Nope. It does.
You have the definition of blind faith. You jump to conclusions without any proof just because you "know". By your logic, I could say that there is a God. I "just know" it. 100 % sure. "It's obvious that there is one! Anyone who doesn't see it is ignorant."
It is ignorant to not look at the 900,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 or so galaxies (rough estimate), and to not think that there is SOME FORM OF LIFE other than our tiny puny planet. [editline]12th March 2011[/editline] And I do know, by personal experience and facts given by ex-mil.
Indeed, I'm sorry to say this, but I really hate people who say "There is no God you can't prove that", but on the other hand say, "There is non-earth life somewhere, I just know it, 100% sure". That's not only lying, it's forcing people to acknowledge your opinion is supirior and theirs is dumb shit cause it's based on nothing... You're doing exactly the same. Faithfull people will always try to convince "rational" people there is a God. Rational people will always try to say to faithfull people there's been a big bang and evolution. These things can go in harmony if we all discuss but treat each other as normal people. Rational people aren't weird because they believe in things that can be proven with science. Faithfull people aren't mad because they believe in something you can't proof (Hence the "believing") But people I discribed as above ruin it for everybody. They don't deserve to discuss with normal people
Out of the hundreds of planets we've searched, Earth has life. That counts as a rate of success does it not?
We have searched, extensively, practically zero planets for life. We have only scraped on the surface of Mars (and the Moon if you want). Earth has life. Yes, we can count that into the numbers if you want (though the original question revolves around ET-life) but that will only tell us that the chance of there being life in the Universe is greater than 0 %. This doesn't help calculating the odds of ET-life.
Well fact is with a 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance of life in the Universe (which we are currently nearing) it still means there must be thousands of planets sustaining a form of life. That is a very very very pessimistic view also, so you can only look up. [editline]12th March 2011[/editline] Goldi-locks can suck my dick.

Do we believe that Earth has a core, that neptune exists, that there are other galaxies? Okay there is science to suggest that there is but we haven't seen any of this ourselves. Aliens could be the same, you can't knock somebody's personal experience from seeing them. Out of the thousands of cases or millions, are you really telling me that all of them are fake?
