Because wood is life in Minecraft. You can use it to build homes, fuel fires, as components for tools and torches, bows and arrows. If I run out of wood this far down, then I'm screwed.

climb back up and replenish your reserves, then make a little storage room half way down.. deposit all of it in there then go get more, that way you have a back up just incase.

I would normally do this, but I wasn't expecting a labyrinth and got lost. I found out that I still had enough wood for 4 more iron pickaxes and shovels, plus 64 more torches, so I should be fine for now. The Creepers here hate me, though.
