As you might know, the cold war was a pretty crazy period that spanned over half of the 20th century. Both the US and the soviets were constantly trying to one-up eachother and the most common way to do that was building insane shit that most of the time involved nuclear power.
So how do you repair and perform maintence on stuff that would for instance literally spew out radioactivity as it flew?
Easy, you build the big robot pictured above (and also pictured below)

So this piece of robot is called the Beetle. I assume it got its name because of the thick carapace.
You see, because radioactivity is pretty bad you have to have stuff that shields you from it when you're playing with it. Most of the time, a simple hazmat suit works. But sometimes you have to do heavy-duty work on some pretty serious radiation leakage so you build robots like the one above for doing that.
And to shield the one man who operated it, you have to have some serious shielding.
We're talking 30 cm of lead encasing it all.
You know those rulers you had back in school? Clear plastic? They are 30 cm long, so now you have a pretty good idea on how long it is.
Or well, you know a full subway sandwich.
Lead is what blocks off gamma rays the best, but you can't see through lead now can you? So to ensure maximum visibility whilst still maintaining full security for the man inside they slabbed on a 60 cm thick piece of glass.
Total weight was at 77 tonnes.
Working by myself is a godsend. I can't stand working with others, I have a completely different view on things than them 99% of the time and it just ends up me going "fuck it were all gonna fail". Then we do and everyone gets mad at me for not doing anything.
I remember one time where me and two people were in a group, two of us did the whole fucking thing while one done nothing, I ended up being sick on the day of our projects presentation.
I go in and the teacher says "Excuse me, Mr. Derp. You weren't here for your presentation therefore you didn't get a grade and must create your own project again!"
