• Dammit, Valve!

I love Valve. A lot. And everything that they stand for. So don't get me wrong. But sometimes, I really think their brains stopped working halfway. I have a problem that has been bugging me for the past few days. Me and my family recently moved into a new house, and because of that, I am without Internet. So I thought "Alright, no biggie, I'll just design a few maps in Hammer and work on my skillz." But no, because apparently, Steam has this incredibly advanced and hi-tech system mumbo jumbo whose only purpose is to mess my day up. Allow me to explain: I launch Steam. Steam says "Can't connect to Internet. Want to launch in Offline Mode?" Alright sure. "Can't connect to Steam network." Underneath that message is another message that says "This action cannot be achieved in Offline mode". This is then followed by Steam promptly closing down. My next idea was that I could just launch the programs manually. I mean, Steam is just a big launcher, after all. And once more, my dreams were crushed, as apparently, every single program, Valve-developed or not, needs to connect to Steam in order to run. And yes, I'm sure that I will get a lot of crap for this, and things such as "You don't know how Steam works. Gtfo >:(" but in my opinion, the programs should be able to work on their own, at least Hammer, since it only uses local files (at least I think it does, makes sense). But the award goes to the Steam support. Seriously, I need to connect to an Internet site to learn why I can't connect to the Internet? I mean come on. </butthurt> I don' know if a lot of people will agree with me. In fact, I think some people will actually disagree with me, for some kind of reason. Nonetheless, it felt good to finally rant about this somewhere. Now why are you still reading this? Go back to your pr0nz and stuff >:3
If you can't connect to the internet you can always resort to the windows help program.
Remember username and password, restart in offline mode
The steam login info needs to be stored on your computer. Meaning, if steam starts automatically when you start your PC, then you should be able to start it in offline mode. I'm going to rape you jimmy.
Remember username and password, restart in offline mode
Offline mode requires an internet connection, doesn't it?
Aren't there any custom Steamless game launchers that can let us make maps in Hammer without the need for Steam or going online? I thought I had heard of them, but I can't recall any app names.
Offline mode requires an internet connection, doesn't it?
Not exactly. It requires you to have saved your password, and to have quit steam properly (As in, no force exit process, no crashes, ect.). Then, offline mode works, and will continue to work.
Since 2004...Steam was always and always have been a BITCH!
Since 2004...Steam was always and always have been a BITCH!
Care to elaborate?
Every time I've needed to log into Steam offline it's worked so I don't know what you guys are whining about.
Care to elaborate?
Crash, sudden loss of files, and that goddamn computer e-mail code check.
and that goddamn computer e-mail code check.
Oh my god, that code check. I want to beat the shit out of whoever thought that was a good idea. I don't care for just doing it once, but I've done it about 8 goddamn times...
Crash, sudden loss of files, and that goddamn computer e-mail code check.
1) Occasional crash, yeah. 2) Loss of files? Not exactly sure what you're talking about. 3) SteamGuard can be disabled fyi.
Oh my god, that code check. I want to beat the shit out of whoever thought that was a good idea.
Valve offices 19:00 "Hey guys people keep getting there accounts hijacked. we need to do something. Gabe, any ideas" He comes over with a chili cheese hot dog and jams it in his throat "Just add some kind of captcha thing to steam for the people who keep getting hacked. Now excuse me, i gotta go work on Half Life, Epsiode 3" Then everyone in room breaks out in laughter.

Garry's Mod suddenly uninstalls itself for me. That's my only reason to hate Steam. The rest is fuckin' A+.
