My cat gets sad when I'm not around. When I get home he runs to my chair and waits for me to sitdown so he can hop up and snooze.

I always figured dogs and cats were about the same level of maintenance though.
All you need to do with a dog is feed it twice a day and wash it/trim its nails every so often.
All you need to do with a cat is feed it twice a day, do the whole litterbox thing and trims its claws every so often if it's an indoor cat.

Dogs are fun to play with, helpful(though sometimes overly sensitive) at letting you know if someone is at the door and in a pinch can be a living food disposal.
Cats are fun to hang out with, help cut down on mice and other vermin and can be a good judge of character. Earning the legitimate affection and trust of a cat is usually a sign of a good person.

I took in a stray cat recently. It's already smarter and more well trained than the annoying ass, but cute, dog I had for 7 years. Also more affectionate and is low maintenance.

Was there multiple cats? As peeing around the house is either males "marking there territory", or they are competing for a female (usually two males one female), or you cat is stressed out.
