As some of you may know, I made a 15 minute long documentary about censorship a while ago for school, which got mostly positive feedback, but there was a lot of controversy around it. I almost wasn't allowed to make it due to the excessive violence and strong language. Thank God I didn't pass in the director's cut with the "sex" section in which I used the orgy scene from "Eyes Wide Shut".
I got lucky, but some students in the past haven't been so lucky. The most notable example of artistic restriction comes from -student name- when he drew a comic book version of Eve from the Genesis part of the bible. The drawing was professionally done, but the school seemed to have an issue with it. The drawing was of a naked Eve, but the thing is, her breasts and pubic area were covered by a snake, likely to be Satan from the story.
I could understand the issue if we were in elementary school, but we're all adults by this point. Hell, even if we WERE in elementary school, you'd think that the school would at least honor the artist for his skill, but instead, -student name- got yelled at for drawing something that was no more explicit than the things that are shown to us in class in our freshman year anyway.
I've always found controversy to be interesting. I like to see what makes people tick, and I love to see how far I can push things without getting in trouble.
The thing is, I'm writing a movie script right now about a person who has gone insane. There is a scene where someone gets shot in the chest and a scene in which someone gets his/her head bashed in with a hammer, all shown in explicit detail. I'm not showing the violence just to get the audience's attention, I'm using it to tell a story. Another thing is, my script is written in a realistic manner. When someone sees a close friend get killed right in front of him, he's not going to scream "OH, DARN IT!".
I hate having to censor myself just because society says I have to. I'm not a child. I refuse to be treated as one.
I know that swearing is not very respectful, but neither are people in real life. I'm not calling out any teachers in my movie, nor am I swearing in the presence of children or any members of authority. I have a vision and I plan on sticking to it because the fact of the matter is, I just don't give a shit what other people say. My script has about 10 uses of the word "fuck" in it, so it's not gratuitous for a 40 minute movie. It's just how people speak in real life.
Don't be surprised if my project gets a lot of negative attention at the end of the school year. To be honest, I don't care if it does. In my opinion, whether it's looked at in a good or bad light, it's still press.
I guess only time will tell.
