1) SOMA - I absolutely loved this game from start to finish.
2) Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number - Liked it more than the original.
3) Cities Skylines - Basically the Sim City we've been waiting for.
4) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Great game but the cut content really hurt it in the long run.
5) Dying Light - Some of the most fun I've ever had in a zombie game.
HONORABLE MENTIONS - Fallout 4, Undertale
League of Legends - very fun game
Starcraft 2 - cool story
1. Hotline Miami 2 - While it doesn't hold a candle to the original, I still had enough fun going for an entire S-ranked playthrough of the game. I still consider the base game a 7/10, but the level editor pushed it right up to number 1 on my list. Absolutely everything I could've wanted
2. Undertale - Fantastic game. Great writing, awesome gameplay, and incredibly unique. Definitely think this one is going to be considered a classic a few years down the line.
3. The Talos Principle: Road to Gehenna - The Talos Principle was my GOTY for 2014, and Road to Gehenna was the perfect expansion. All the puzzles were extremely difficult compared to the first, and managed to use all the mechanics from the first game in really creative ways. I would say the writing was even better compared to the base game (while it was one of my favorite parts of the original game), and it was an incredibly inventive story I've never seen in a game before.
4. SOMA - Despite being very story-heavy and at times feeling like a bit of a "walking simulator", I loved this game. The story had me hooked the entire way through, and I absolutely loved the setting and the way puzzles were seamlessly integrated into it. Despite what many people said, I found this to easily be one of Frictional's scariest games yet, and it proved to me that they still definitely have what it takes.
5. The Witcher 3 - While I did burn myself out on this game, I thought it was great for the entire time I'd played through it. Combat was fun and smooth, and the writing was phenomenal. I had lots of fun just wandering around the game world, and am probably going to pick it back up again over the winter break since I haven't played it in a few months.
Overall, this was a pretty good year for games.
Mgs v and dying light as far as AAA goes
1. The Witcher 3 There are so many things that this game did right while also delivering from a technical standpoint something truly mind bogglingly incredible and it was also really fun for me to play.
2. Nuclear Throne I've sunk so many hours and runs into this. Stupidly fun. Basically if Hotline Miami and Binding of Isaac had a mutant baby, it would be this game.
3. Undertale Went into this game blind. Best decision ever to just ride the train in without a clue. All I'll say is that Sans is just the best character.
4. Bloodborne Just about fucking everything in this games lore, art and gameplay clicked with me. Huge softspot for Lovecraft horror which this game just oozes with in every aspect.
5. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood A fantastic prequel to arguably the best game of 2014 Wolfenstein The New Order. Crammed so much character into such a short game.
(I'd also like to say I haven't played MGS5, it looks like something that would right up my alley despite some of its problems like the rushed end game)
Other games I played and yet also thoroughly enjoyed: Homeworld Remastered Collection, Alan Wake (late to the show, I know) and Killing Floor 2.
1. Witcher 3 - This made me realise how much I enjoy medieval esque games
2. MGS5 - Loved the gameplay, story was a bit empty
3. Fallout 4 - I wasn't expecting goty but wasn't disappointed either
4. Dying Light - Biggest surprise of this year
5. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood - For a standalone small game, it was just as fun as the New Order.
Bloodborne
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
Nuclear Throne
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
Wasteland 2 Director's Cut
1: Witcher 3 - seriously is one of my favorite games of the past 5 years, maybe more. #2 doesn't even belong near the same tier of this game. Never has a game's sidequest made me cry, the world actually comes to life, and gwent is fun as fuck on its own.
-
2: Ori and the Blind Forest - beautiful game in both visuals and audio design. The best way I can describe this game is that it is just a joy to play, just straight up enjoyable, I almost can't put into words.
3 City Skylines - the game simcity should have been. Very addicting in a fun way, and managing traffic has never been so fun. Great mod support.
-
-
-
4: MGSV - I still havent beaten it and the story is trash but I absolutely love the gameplay/gamefeel of it. Sneaking around bases never felt so satisfying its been so long since a decent stealth game has come along.
5: KF2 - I'm still pissed about the slow as fuck development but I just enjoy the gamefeel of the weapons and popping zeds. It just has some serious balance issues holding it back which is a damn shame.
Notable mentions
Just Cause 3 - sorry but it just gets repetitive after a while. I can only really play it in short bursts otherwise I get bored. For those moments it is fun as hell and I love the wingsuit and upgraded grapple.
GTAV pc - seriously fucking dropped the ball on the online. The whole money system is assbackwards to the theme of gta in general. Wait I have to work for all to acquire all of my cars, weapons, and heists just so I can have fun and fuck around? I have to worry about people blowing up my cars, worry about spending money on fucking ammo for a mission or just screwing around and play boring as fuck fetch quests to make cash? And heists are overly difficult with the limited lives, bullet sponge enemies with ridiculous autoaim, and asshole-ish community who are on edge to get the most efficient payout? No thank you shark cards, I'll pass.
Bloodborne - I want to play this game so fucking bad, but I don't want to get a ps4. Please please oh please come to pc, this game looks fucking sick and I loved dark souls 1.
Sonic boom - Sonic boom sonic boom sonic booooom
Fallout 4 - I'm already bored of it. The dialog has already become super stale, when it was so much fun in new vegas. The level system is just boring since you are basically just working toward becoming a demi god in the wasteland with no real compromise. The side quests are so fucking boring and so few of them are tied to any interesting venues/rewards/story. I had fun at first but there is so much crap that is a chore to do like the settlements, crafting, dealing with ai, that even though I dumped a bunch of hours in I feel like I accomplished nothing. It just feels so... unbalanced, like they put all this effort into boring things like settlements and crafting and neglected the most important thing in an rpg, an immersive world with interesting characters that are fun to interact with and places to go.
1.Nuclear Throne: Has become one of my favorite games. Technically came out this year so I count it.
2.Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows: Shovel Knight was one of my favorite games last year and PoS, imo, is even better. I just hope it doesn't take another year for King and Spectre Knight.
3.Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: I loved MH3U and since 4U is better in almost every way makes it a clear choice for me.
4.Splatoon: I just like most things about the game. Though I still haven't beaten the single player campaign :v:
5.MKX: I'm not the best at fighting games and mostly play them with my brothers and always have super fun while playing with them. This one I had the most fun with this year.
Honorable mentions:
Fallout 4: Was fun, not my favorite Beth game, but still fun.
Paladins: Still in Closed Beta so I'm not fully counting it, but still very fun and hope it the best, considering the stigma Hi-Rez has.
Bloodborne: I'm a weirdo and still prefer DaS2 over it, but I still had a nice time playing it.
Killing Floor 2: Hate how slow it's going, but still have fun when the updates do come out.
Dinosaur Hunt: Africa Contract: Changed my life.
Undertale
Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows
Smash Bros 4 Wii U (It came out November last year, and it consumed most of my 2015, so I'll count it)
I wanted to play Splatoon and Bayonetta 2, never got around to it.
That's it. Most of the Nintendo games that interest me are 2016 releases like FE: Fates and Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, among others.
Not in order but I guess I'll give a quick summary of my thoughts on it.
Undertale: At least in my opinion it was quite funny, somewhat challenging and it clearly shows the dev cared about it.
R6: Siege: Although the base price is questionable this was one the most satisfying shooters of the year.
SOMA: Not many games make me think over things from the game afterwards, would recommend.
Fallout 4: As many have said, good game, bad RPG, can't wait until GECK and expansions come out.
Bloodborne: Although the PS4 exclusivity can put many off, I definitely recommend picking it up if you get the PS4.
and a little bit off topic, my "I'm sad that it could've been better" reward goes to:
Evolve: day one DLC (as well as the future DLC passes) and the initial price ruined the games reputation immediately but I'm glad to say that the game is slowly making good progress by giving free skins (and a new thing that gives variations of characters for free) but I don't think it's ever going to be popular again.
Hatred
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
Killing Floor 2
Soma
MGSV
1.Alien:Isolation
2.Valkyria Chronicles
3.Resident Evil REmake
4.Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth
5.Oddworld: New N' Tasty
I didn't think 2015 was going to be a particularly decent year. Glad I was wrong. Some great ports this year on top of new titles. And 2016 is looking good so far too.
Wasn't Alien Isolation released in 2014?
Probably Until Dawn is my favorite game I've played this year just because I can tell everyone working on the project actually cared about it. It's one of those games that had a lot of love put into it.
I'm too lazy to pick four other games.
1. Fallout 4
2. Cities: Skylines
3. Grand Theft Auto V (PC)
4. Killing Floor 2
5. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
1. Undertale
2. Touhou Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom
2. World of Warships
3. Hotline Miami 2
It's hard to choose a position for them. And most games I played this year weren't from 2015 either
Wasn't Alien Isolation released in 2014?
Late 2014, but it had DLC carrying it into early 2015. and I did a second Nightmare Mode run through this year on top of the challenge levels and enjoyed it immensely. VC was also a late 2014 release. I'm kindof a slowpoke and work a lot, not much gaming this past year until a few months ago. So I'm playing catchup with some titles.
In no particular order
MGSV
Helldivers
Fallout 4 - it doesn't deserve a spot on this list but it's better than most other things, so
Homeworld Remastered (Particularly HW2 RM, the fact that HW1RM has some shit bugs is forgiven by being packaged with the original games)
Unreal Tournament
Honestly a pretty shitty year for games. Only a few really good releases, everything else has been small indie games or AAA multiplayer-only manshoots with little depth or substance to them
5. Shadowrun Hong Kong
4. Undertale
3. Witcher 3
2.Lisa the Joyful
1. Hotline Miami 2
5) BoI: Afterbirth
As much as this dlc frustrates me I'd be lying if it didn't make me sink in another 100 hours into the game. Greed mode was sadly rather short lived but loads of fun.
4) Besiege
While it's very short on content the possibilities of what one can make and do in this game are amazing. Despite only having around 35 levels or so right now I've happily sunk dozens of hours on this game making all sorts of tanks and airplanes.
3) Splatoon
You can't get any more "Nintendo does an FPS" than this. I've only been playing the game a bit but once you get used to using the Gamepad it's a lot of fun. Shame map rotation could have been better.
2) GTAV PC
I got a new comp mostly to play this, and just the campaign was worth it. It ironed out many of the problems the previous games had and was still real fun.
1) Undertale
You've heard the praises already, I won't go back into this.
TBH I haven't played many 2015 games, but caught up on a lot of old ones. A good year overall.
1) Xenoblade Chronicles X
2) Bloodborne
3) Metal Gear Solid V
4) Splatoon
5) Ori and the Blind Forest
Witcher 3 looks fun, but I still have the first two Witchers in my backlog to go through first.
I haven't played much this year so....
1. GTA V PC (Multiplayer sucks but I still had loads of fun on Singleplayer and with mods)
2. TF2 Classic (Great mod that I had a lot of fun with)
3. Rainbow Six Siege (Surprisingly Good)
1. Bloodborne
2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
3. The Witcher 3
4. Fallout 4
5. Pillars of Eternity (It would probably be higher if I played more than 79 minutes)
I could write an entire article on why I love each of these games but instead Ima just list them with a brief sentence. So in no particular order:
Witcher 3 - Probably the best example of how to get open world story telling right, every tiny little side quest and bit of hidden is interconnected and full of compelling narrative.
MGSV - Stellar stealth gameplay and a narrative that is compelling on a micro level and downright stupid on a macro level.
Undertale - The kind of game that'll have you switching back and forth between tears and laughter within the space of two minutes.
Life Is Strange (some of it came out this year) - If you can fight through some cringy 'teen' dialogue it'll be one of the most touching stories you'll experience this year.
Duck Game - Pure and simple couch fun.
[editline]27th December 2015[/editline]
I've been finding a lot of lighthearted comfort in my the honorable mentions Rainbow Six Siege and Killing Floor 2.
I got a PS4 for Xmas so I'm looking forward to seeing if I'd have considered Until Dawn and Bloodborne to that list. There have been so many great games this year it's actually kind of overwhelming, and looking at the release schedule for next year it looks like we're entering some sort of gaming golden age. I mean next year is opening with a new XCOM!
I wrote about it if anyone's interested, but I don't see why you would be :suicide: https://rossy167.wordpress.com/2015/12/28/my-top-5-games-of-2015/
serious sam 2
I only played 4 games so it's easy for me.
1. Witcher 3
2. MGSV (I had most fun in this game but sadly the missing parts were felt)
3. Hotline Miami 2
4. GTAV PC (I had a lot of fun but it won a lot of awards in the 2 previous years so I place it behind all the new 2015 games)
1) Undertale
2) Until Dawn
3) Life is Strange
4) Alien: Isolation
5) Black Ops 3
I didn't really play many games from this year
In no particular order
MGSV

Bad year for games? MGSV, Witcher 3, Undertale, Rocket League, Bloodborne, Fallout 4? I mean it feels like this is a year where there were so many amazing games it was hard for there to not be something that plays to your tastes. Idk, just seems we've had a mega critical hit in just about every genre this year. Except maybe FPS but even then there was the Wolfenstein expandalone, CSGO exists, R6 Siege was an expensive but pleasant experience and Overwatch is on the way.
MGSV
Rocket League
Splatoon
Bloodborne
Witcher 3 I guess?
I haven't finished Undertale yet, but that will probably end up on this list if it keeps up in quality. Wish I spent more time with Super Mario Maker as well.
edit: Oh, and I played Axiom Verge which was pretty sweet. I'm a big fan of metroidvanias and that game was dope.
