Blue Comet SPT Layzner is really good. You just have to watch the third OVA instead of the final episode because it got cut abruptly short due to sponsors.
It actually rated higher than Zeta Gundam at the time.

Yes, it is. Very heavy on the real part of the robot, with fuel being a huge and constant issue. The only thing that makes it a little less Real than it could be is the fact that the cockpits are in the head, which feels like more of a producer-mandate than any deliberate design.
It was also one of the first shows to have a pacifist MC pilot. It might seem a bit grating and unoriginal now, but it was very fresh at the time.
